The narrator utilises the characters to explore the theme and the conflicts of freedom. In chapter 2, the seniors are about to be medically examined for the war, and the upper middlers are realising how "careless and wild" they are. This is highlighting the freedom the boys have before entering the war, and the restrictions the war brings to the soldiers. As the upper middle class are the "sign of life (...) fought to preserve".
