In terms of education, immigrant students have the right to a public education regardless of their immigration status. Educators have to ensure emotional and academic support for those students who escaped from severe trauma, this is the time where teachers make students feel safe no matter what. An important point that I have noticed is that teachers should not become political and keep the learning environment just that.

One thing that surprised me about the demographics of America's immigrants is the progress of education since 1980. Since then the education levels have risen, in 2016 17.2 % of immigrants (ages 25+) had a bachelor’s degree and another 12.8% had attained a post-graduate degree. Lastly, 44 million immigrants in the U.S. are more educated than ever.

US born students are 14% less expected to get a high school diploma compared to immigrants. I thought both immigrants and US born students would have similar percentages being that HS is a broader curriculum rather than specialized majors. I also have always saw high school as something mandatory but college is a more optional path so I expected higher HS graduation numbers in general.

In schools discussion of immigration rights is often talked about when it is time to vote. In my school history teachers would also educate us on citizenship tests so that we can understand the immigration process. This often teaches all students, no matter their status, what rights are granted to immigrants. Schools also have inclusivity training for teachers which requires teachers to learn about acceptance, worthy, and ways to make students feel welcomed in a classroom.

One big thing I think schools can do is make sure the emergency contact form for their immigrant students is updated and correct. Not only will that make the student feel safer but the parent as well. Also having translators or someone who understands a foreign language in the school can allow that student to feel like they have someone to communicate in the way they best know how.

One thing that can be done to further support immigrant students is to create a community where they can communicate in a language they understand better aside from English. For example, in middle school, we had a Saturday program that involved immigrant parents and students feel more welcome in the community. There would be students who were brought in who spoke languages such as Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian, Georgian, and we would do activities to provide support and opportunities for questions, and any resources they would need.

There should be more open spaces for these families and the students. Too often, Americans (including children) portray this “superior” complex. If teachers witness this , this should be stopped. On a higher level, there should be supplies provided in case students cannot afford certain tools. There should be more alternatives for notebooks or items.
On a higher level, there needs to be trainings for parents and students in case of raids or violations of their rights by officers, schools, or even other parents. There should be consequences for school officials that release private information.

The fact that immigrant students compared to U. S born population, are almost likely to finish high school and college is surprising because it is harder for immigrant students to finish school and get a degree. It states, “In 2016, 30.0% of immigrants ages 25 and older had a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared with 31.6% of the U.S. born.” which tells us that the assistance given to immigrants students are paying off and working. The fact that “100,000 undocumented students graduate high school every year,” is surprising because that’s a huge number.

For some immigrant's students not having family support is also a problem, some parents work for long hours for cheap pay and because of that they cannot attend school trips with their kids, or they cannot go to parent teacher conferences.

I think the most common and difficult challenge that immigrant students would encounter is language barrier. In my experience, I think you would be a lot easier to being comfortable to new country you live in. For myself, I immigrant here when I was 16, I feel like it is a little bit not suitable for me to immigrant to here. Because 16 years old is a rebellious period. If I am tired of learning English, I would just get out of the school. As I know, many of immigrant students cut school, because they don't understand the language. So they are no long on the pathway of the education.

At first I thought it was the wrong video....but after a few minutes she clarified herself in English. Ms. Vancour seemed very proud of who she is regardless of her physical appearance. She also seemed very giving, in the sense that she was willing to listen to others stories and help them. Another thing that shocked me was her response to her daughter saying "that women's skin looks like chocolate". Ms. Vancour was one of the More than 5 million children in that lived in the U.S. live with an undocumented parent. More than 11 million people in America are undocumented immigrants.

What’s surprised me was the host’s reaction when she realized she made an assumption about someone else after disliking when it was done to her. It made me realize that sometimes people are aware and regretful of their hypocrisy (whether unintentional or intentional) whereas others would let it just slip by. I wonder how many people notice when they’re doing things they don’t want done to others or if they make excuses for it due to their experience with it.

What surprised me most from Ms. Vancour’s TedTalk is discussing the idea of saying I don’t know. I feel like a lot of people are ignorant to the fact that they make a lot of stereotypical assumptions. They immediately jump to conclusions without stopping and wondering if they are in the wrong. Some people need to hear how Ms. Vancour states that a person needs to take a deep breath before assuming something.

Vancour’s speech was wonderful. What impressed me was that her mother worked hard to learn English when she was pregnant. Finally became a citizen in 2000. And what Vancour said: ”that i feel like my truest self when i can speak Spanish". I think it’s great, she is brave to stand up and tell her story.

What resonated with me most from Ms. Vancour’s TedTalk was how she reminded us that even the smallest assumption we make about people, it can greatly impact a person. I think sometimes we unconsciously make assumptions about people because it makes us feel that we have all the answers which goes back to how she mentioned that we are afraid to be wrong.

There has always been a discrimination for people when they don’t speak English no matter the language. What shocked me but I wasn’t surprised was that 11 million children in America have undocumented parents. People are judge every day just off the language the speak someone will make an assumption about them. But the main take away was the end where she said that we should be comfortable with saying I don’t know and learn to educate yourself instead of being Ignorant to another language or culture.

What resonated with me the most from Ms. Vancour’s TedTalk was when she said that ”we will never know fear or loss as deeply as those who came before us” when she was talking about her mother crossing the US border. It makes me think about all the hardships the past generations went through, for us to be where were at. She also said that no one really knows your story unless they ask you. So instead of making assumptions just ask.

Many undocumented students can not apply for scholarships granted by the government because the are undocumented. I also liked what she said about how children approach life without bias. Parents often pass their views onto their children whether consciously or unconsciously. Overall I really enjoyed her ted talk.
