One of these problems is the issue regarding poor seeding.

Research Link

The triple elimination tournament format is a way of running a tournament that involves 3 brackets. The upper bracket is for the winners of the first game, the middle is for the losers. From there, they climb up and down the brackets. This system avoids people being knocked out in the first round, and gives the team 3 rounds, in which they will be knocked out after the 3 games, if they lost them all. This system also allows teams to get to the finals and win even though they lost their first matches.

Extended tournaments can be ongoing for an indefinite time or can be abbreviated to a week, a month, or another set period. This tournament type can be most useful for drop-in programs, such as intramural or racket clubs. Its weaknesses are however, that players challenge each other, which means that some players might not have as much playing time, and because of the challenge system, the ranking at the end of the tournament might not be accurate because some players may have played very few if any games. Below is a visual representation of what a pyramid style tournament might look like.

Team Leadership is prone to creating better relationships between members, and members also work more effectively, now that they have also had an opportunity to say their point of view.

Examples of people that use team leadership would be most professional sports teams, as a coach from the sideline can't really do much.

Democratic Coaching - Tomas: Task 2

https://coachingsportleadership.weebly.com/democratic.html

Democratic coaching is exactly what it sounds like. Coaches use the technique of decision making and goal setting with input from their athletes instead of dictating to them. It’s when a leader determines what is needed to be done, explains it, and then seeks feedback from his/her team/players and then decides how to proceed. The athletes provide their own objectives under a proposal outlined by the coach. Democratic coaches give a lot of chances and choices to players and teams, which benefits them in their skill of collaboration and support their own development and direction. This style is well-suited to individual sports, like tennis or track, where individual athletes have to take a lot of control over their training style. Long story short, this style of leadership could also be called “self coaching”.

A leader that uses the democratic leadership style is the current Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. He has shown in many ways and matches the ability to use the democratic leadership style to a successful effect. Proof that his democratic coaching is successful is that Liverpool have had the best season of their history right now, and are about 20 points clear from 2nd place Manchester City at the moment.

Laissez_ Faire coaching is similar to Democratic coaching in the aspext of giving the athlete a lot of power and decision making. The coach is there to offer guidance and support when needed but most desisions are taken by the athlete.

When it comes to the difference between Democratic and Laissez-Faire coaching, democratic leaders take an active role in the decision-making process but they involve others. They carry the responsibility for seeing that the decisions made achieve the desired outcomes. Laissez-faire leaders have very little involvement in decision-making, mostly leaving everything up to their team.

So instead of the coach in the background and the captain taking control, in a Laissez faire style coaching, both the captain and the coach take background roles and let their team decide what is best for them.

Unlike an Autocratic leader, they will take in inputs and suggestions from other members, but not necessarily have an open mind to them if it goes against the book or their beliefs. They are less likely to try new things, as they consider the risks to not be worth it.

This type of leadership best suits tasks that are repetitive that don't need adapting or tweaking. I was also a referee in a similar unit in PE in my old school, so I do have a bit of experience being a referee. Referees are suppose to control the games with authority and ensure smooth running of the games, which I want to do, because I want games to always be fair and that everyone enjoys the game, and I don't think that I am so shy to be scared of what others think of my opinion when I make calls during a game.I am always open to suggestions on rule changes just like referees are supposed to, and I think overall I am responsible enough to take this role.

I think the role of a sports board suits a bureaucratic style more often than not. Since this job is all about organizing and organizing systems, I think it is important to have a routine foundation and understanding of how conventional + traditional games are usually played. I think this job is the one that needs the least input from everybody else (as I trust that previous professional sports boards already know what's best) and I also think this job requires the least adapting to suit our group. I think this role also suits my personality well because some of my strengths are planning. I am also good at coordinating with others to make a decision collectively.

I have done something similar before in the past P.E classes in Grade 8 and I think I was able to prepare the materials smoothly and with right amount. Duty teams are suppose to support the game from the back to help and make them feel ready which I want it to be, because I want games to be fun, enjoyable but smooth and I want the players to feel comfortable while playing. I like to hear everyones opinion, as maybe in-game they have a different angle and can see different things clearer. Overall, I feel like a coach has a democratic and light authoritarian leadership style, which is the same as me in some situations. I like to take control although listen to everyones input, as I want two opinions. I am quick on my feet, and I can think of solutions to possible problems. I think that in a team, they are all collectively responsible, I will try and utilize each player. As a captain, I would try to communicate my teams needs and thoughts to the coach as well as suggst ideas and keep them motivated. Finally I would like to mention that my work as a leader in the futsal unit helped me realize how students of this age get motivated and how I can be a good leader.

The type of leadership I chose to research in the previous task was team leadership, a type of leadership in which everyone contributes to making final decisions. I think this this way of leadership is the best way to lead a team competing for something, and I also think I would want to be a part of that. Now there's no pressure on a captain or coach when making important decisions, and that way everyone can enjoy competing as well. The overall team chemistry increases as well.

Season of sport proposal - Tomas: Task 4

My season of sport is Football (soccer). I don't know if what I propose could work for this school for the size of the pitch we have, but this is my proposal. We are going to have group stages first of all. It's when all teams in a group play each other, and at the end, the top 2 teams of that group go to elimination while the rest are knocked out. That's how it usually works, but in this unit, we will have a group stage, then an extended tournament for everyone. This will allow all teams to have as many opportunities to play as possible. According to the amount of points a team got during the group stage, that's how they will be ranked in this extended (pyramid) tournament. Each win is 3 points, a draw (tie) is 1 point, and if you lose it's 0 points. An example of an extended tournament is in my Task 1 so if you want to check it out go ahead. But after knowing how many points teams got in the group stage, we rank them from 1st tier, 2nd tier, and so on. After a certain number of games (to be determined depending on the time we have), who ever is on top of the pyramid are determined the winners. The materials we will need are bibs, soccer balls, a pitch, and a whistle. We will need all the roles that were provided from Task 3, and each game will be about 5 - 7 minutes most likely. If we are using the turf in school it will be quite challenging, but if so, the games will probably be 4-5 aside, with subs that the teams will strategize on their own. The winners will win a prize and there will be a ceremony at the end of them lifting the trophy or whatever the prize is.

My season of sport is Badminton. I don't know if this proposal would work in this school since there is only one gym. We are going to be in teams of 6 (3 pairs in one group + switch pairs as you change games). I think I'll be using extended tournament for the tournament. This is because if the tournament was a single-elimination, the team that lost won't be able to play for the rest of the tournament which won't be fair and fun, so by using extended tournament, even if you lose, you'll still have more games to play. According to the number of points a team got during the group stage, that's how they will be ranked, and this is how the winners are decided. The team with the most point wins. Each win is 2 points, a draw is 1 point, and if you lose it's 0 points. The example of the multi-level tournament is in Tomas's task 1 note. The materials we will need are shuttles, badminton nets and pole, basketball, whiteboard + marker, and timer. We will need all of the roles that were provide from Task 3, and each game will be about 5-6 minutes. If we are using the basketball court, it would be challenging because not every team can play at the same time which might take a long time to finish the tournament. The winners will win a prize and there will be a ceremony at the end of them lifting the trophy or getting a snack back or etc.

My season of sport is Football (soccer). Due to the limited space we have for a game, the logistics may differ. There will be about 9-10 groups, and what I propose is that we do a 9 team double elimination tournament style. Since we have limited space, we only have 2-3 games occurring at a time. After the game is played, we calculate the scores and determine a winner. A win equates to 3 points, a draw is 1 point, and a loss is 0 points. Some materials we need to have are soccer balls, goals, bibs, and cones if we want to be extra sure if a ball went out of play or not. To make this interesting or rewarding, I suggest that at the end, the team with the most points gets a trophy or a prize they can lift (snacks?)

My season of sport is futsal. Futsal, while being similar to football, requires a smaller space in order to play a game, and can also be done inside. Therefore, it would be an ideal sport for our grade, with the rather small facilities we have. The games will be played in round robin style, so that the teams are able to play every day, however, on the last days, the 4 best teams (out of the 10 teams) play semifinals and finals. I want to add these classic elimination systems at the end to raise excitement, as a classic round robin system is not really exciting unless you have 2 very even teams at the end of the tournament, while still giving everyone a chance to get there (no one gets knocked out the first day and has to sit out for the rest of the unit). The games will be short, 5-7 minutes long, which will allow everyone to play at least 3 matches every PE lesson. A win gives the team 3 points, a tie gives them 1 point, and a loss gives them none. The final game will have everyone watching, and this will be played on the full court inside the gym. The prize will be something affordable yet something worth fighting for, such as snacks or candy.

My season of sport is Basketball. I think that we will be able to a have a good amount of games with the space provided. There will be 12 teams of 5 assuming that we have 60 people. 2 matches will take place at the same time. Five people will be playing. Each game will be 4 minutes long. A win counts as 3 points and losses and draws count as 1. We will be picking the top 5 teams to go to the second round. The other teams will all participate in a janken to get one wildcard that will move on. That means that teams that rank from 6-12 will have an equal chace to move on. If teams have the sam escore, the ranking will be based on how many points were scored. With the final six teams that are left, The team that is ranked first will play the Wildcard team. The team that is second plays the rank five and so on. The final game willl be a full court match.

My season of sport is volleyball. The grade will be divided into 8 groups of 7-8 people, and the gym will host two games at the same time (half court). The 5th group would take tally and play the role of a scorekeeper and referee for the 4 groups playing. For groups with 7 people, one person will sit out every game (with fair play time managed by the own teams). My tournament system will be a combination of many types. Each group will play against 4 teams. The top 4 groups with the highest winning percentages {[win x (0.5 x ties) ] / total games played} x 100% will go under a double elimination (a round of semifinals, then finals between the winners of semi while game between losers of semi) to finalize the top 4 rankings. Each game will last 7 minutes, which is plenty of time to finish in one PE class.
