We embark on a new journey, one still involving indoctrination and brainwashing but also a journey marked with child killers. The students brought the books out into the main square where they were burned. This was the start of the purifying of the German race. The majority of the food went to the soldiers fighting on the front lines and the rest was given to the civilians. Food rations consisted of very little, enough to last a short amount of time. WWII was the first time that MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) were distributed in bulk. It comes as a result of a Hitler Youth rally. This is where she steals her first book, officially becoming the Book Thief. She is caught by the mayor's wife, starting a friendship that would end with many, many more books in Liesel's possession. This unlike the others, ties directly into the plot of the entire novel.
