This is a pair of women's pants my sister bought. That spot I'm holding in the photo is designed to look like a back pocket. However, there is nothing there, it's just stitching. Fake pockets like these on women's pants promote heteronormativity (Ch. 9), as they require women to carry bags with them, or have a man carry their valuables for them. This could even be seen as a form of social control (Ch. 6) through the use of fashion (Ch. 16) as whoever is designing these does so with that in mind.

This is 3rd Street in Turners Falls, right about where it intersects with L Street. It's important to note the housing on the left of the image. Nearly all the housing, particularly if you were to turn left at that intersection, is low-income housing. It is not until you go up the hill (you can kind of see the start of it in this photo) that you start to see nicer, (and of course,) more expensive housing, and all the schools. I consider this an example of residential segregation (Ch. 7), as the wealthier residents have a barrier between themselves and the lower classes.

The Greenfield RMV, and all RMVs and DMVs for that matter, are perfect examples of bureaucracy (Ch. 5), as the way these places work relies heavily on efficiency and through countless standardized forms. If you do not have the correct documentation, you are simply out of luck, which actually creates a source of social inequality (Ch. 7), as many of those without employment or housing will not have the proper documentation to get services they need, especially getting an ID, as proper identification is required for many services, such as bank accounts, or possibly getting jobs.

I took this at the Franklin County Technical School, also in Montague. I would consider Tech to be an out-group (Ch. 5) to the Turners Falls High School in-group, as there has always been a rivalry between the two schools, second only to Greenfield High School. I decided to photograph Tech instead of Greenfield, however, because I see technical schools representing a sort of counterculture (Ch. 3), going against the traditional career/educational path and instead promoting trades

This was taken at Turners Falls High School in Montague. This is where I went to high school, meaning it served as an agent of socialization (Ch. 4) to me. People who went to the school or are going to the school belong to an in-group (Ch. 5), particularly the older alumni.
Between 2017 and 2018, the school made a progressive (Ch. 16) change, as they switched their team names from the outdated and offensive term "Indians" to the "Thunder", despite backlash from many locals and alumni. At the time, I had just graduated and was indifferent to the change, but now it's very clear that the change needed to happen.

This was taken in the Holyoke Mall recently. Notice the lack of people. Due in large part to changes in technology in the last 20 years, much of our shopping happens online now, leading to a lot of mall closures. This is an example for Technological Determinism (Ch. 16), as a change in technology is leading to a change in our culture. This is now being accelerated by the social change (Ch. 16) that has occured in response to the pandemic, and it is due in large part to cultural lag (Ch. 16) that many of these malls are still open.

This is Federal Street in Greenfield. Although the Southern end of the street, closer the Main Street, has a few unique places, the Northern end is what I think is a great example of cultural leveling (Ch. 3). It is home to three gas stations, five fast food restaurants (including two Dunkin Donuts, essentially right across the street from each other), three auto parts stores, two pharmacies, and (I think) four car dealerships. Aside from the specific names of the car dealerships, this could all be found just about anywhere in America.

I took this photo last summer, when a group of friends and I went to Nashville, TN for a week to celebrate my friend's graduation from UMass. In the photo, we are clearly in a crowd (Ch. 5), but within the crowd are those belonging to my primary group (Ch. 5) (the ones in the Hawaiian shirt and the NHL hat). Not visible in the picture are a a couple people who I would consider to be in my secondary group (Ch. 5), those who I am not especially close with, but we still share social ties (Ch. 5) as we graduated from the same school the same year and played on the same football team.
This photo also presents a social dilemma (Ch. 16), as we went to a Southern state, in June 2021, and spent a lot of time in crowds of people. Luckily, we were all vaccinated and nobody got COVID from the trip.

This is me in my Boston Celtics jersey, taken during a playoff game a few days ago. Celtics fans can be considered a subculture (Ch. 3) as it is a smaller culture within a larger culture of sports fans, which in itself is a smaller culture within a larger culture. Although there aren't many strict norms (Ch. 3), (other than obviously root for the Celtics) some of the major ones include rooting against the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers. Sanctions (Ch. 3) include being called out as a "fake fan" or a "bandwagoner." It is also advised to generally keep a positive attitude about the team during bad stretches, or you may get labeled as a "doomer" in many virtual communities (Ch. 5) such as Reddit or Twitter.

This is a photo I took at my internship, observing vernal pools in Northfield. Although it doesn't appear to have much to do with society (Ch. 1), it is because of a former public goods dilemma (Ch. 16), that it is being monitored in the first place, as the area used to be public and people took too much wood, and when the land was made private, loggers still cut trees within an illegal distance to the pools.
The other reason I chose this photo is that I could not have gotten the internship without a social network (Ch. 5), as I would not have known of the opportunity had my advisor not been close with the people that monitor the area.
