He suggested the new land be named after Queen Elizabeth l of England in around 1584. It was because Queen Elizabeth was called "Virgin Queen". She then gave Raleigh permission to colonize Virginia.
The first expedition in 1584 disappeared and was assumed they'd been kidnapped or either killed by the Native Americans living around the area.
