- Depth is the key aspect of designing nuclear power plants. The goal of most of them is to provide three levels of containment between society and dangerous radiation.
- This building is typically made of steel and is very large with a domed roof.
- The inside houses the reactor and coding system and the building itself is made to withstand pressures of up to 50 pounds per square inch.
- There are usually fans to keep temperatures down as well as devices called ring headers that spray water in order to reduce pressure.

- These buildings are typical enclosed and made of concrete.
- They house things like support systems to cool radioactive material, emergency cooling systems, and other emergency systems.
- BWR (Boiling Water Reactors) heat water until it boils and then uses the steam to drive a turbine.
- PWR (Pressurized Water Reactors) heat water as well, but do not allow it to boil. The heat is then shared with a turbine.

- This building is typically an enclosed metal space.
- It houses several important aspects of the plant such as:
Turbine and generator: These provide the right kind of energy (mechanical) for the plant to run. Cooling systems for the turbine and generator are also included in the turbine building.
Condenser/condensate/feedwater systems: This system simply supplies water to the generator.
Electrical switchgear rooms: This is where the electricity that runs the plant is managed.
