Exclusionary discipline does more harm than good. Removing the student from the classroom shows that they are the problem. It can apply a label that will result in discouragement. Within the curriculum, I will make sure I am asking questions that help students connect to their own life. This was the start to my curious questions about why people act the way they do. I have never thought "that person has bad behavior, so they must be bad", I've always asked for perspective. Why did they do that? What needs are not being met?
I dedicate my teaching career to thinking of students as people first and learners second. If I can lead them to resources or help in any way to meet their basic needs, then they will be in a place to learn effectively. (say it again for the people in the back). There is no such thing as a bad student, there are only unexpected behaviors. Students want to belong and they want to succeed. When students act out, it is really a cry for help. When there is unexpected behavior, I will assume the best and look to my resources. First, I will discover the source of the problem, then I will teach or reteach expected behaviors. There will be a procedure for every need. An area in the classroom will be available to calm down if they need it.
