We understand that we never stop learning and strive to teach others when they do not know, this includes Ms. Stalkfleet. Creating a safe and open environment is the most important foundational piece to learning. This is a place where questions can be asked and mistakes can be made. We take ownership of our actions and look out for each other. We work through conflicts by having honest conversations and building trusing relationships.

Trauma-informed teaching is important to me because of the experience I have had with zero-tolerance policies. Exclusionary discipline does more harm than good. Removing the student from the classroom shows that they are the problem. It can apply a label that will result in discouragement. Having an open-door policy in my classroom and meeting with students one on one to get to know them will help me know where they are at and what they are going through. Through this, I will have perspective and be able to resolve issues before they escalate.

Building a trusting relationship with students will have a positive effect on motivation, classroom culture, behavior, and academic achievement. Students can also tell if a teacher is being authentic or not. Genuinely caring about the interests of the students and their success will motivate them to care about their own success. I want students to be excited to come to my class and learn together.

A question I have asked myself since Middle School is "how can you expect a person to learn if they don't have any food at home?". This was the start to my curious questions about why people act the way they do. I have never thought "that person has bad behavior, so they must be bad", I've always asked for perspective. Why did they do that? What needs are not being met?
I dedicate my teaching career to thinking of students as people first and learners second. If I can lead them to resources or help in any way to meet their basic needs, then they will be in a place to learn effectively. I cannot expect my students to be focused on our lessons if their basic needs are not being met.

I will teach students to understand how to create trusting relationships with each other and how that will benefit their learning. I will listen with intention and genuinely care about my students.

STUDENTS WANT TO LEARN BEHAVIOR! (say it again for the people in the back). There is no such thing as a bad student, there are only unexpected behaviors. Students want to belong and they want to succeed. When students act out, it is really a cry for help. When there is unexpected behavior, I will assume the best and look to my resources. First, I will discover the source of the problem, then I will teach or reteach expected behaviors. There will be a procedure for every need. An area in the classroom will be available to calm down if they need it. Students will be taught how to use this area and how to rejoin the class.

Harnessing a positive connection can make or break the success of students. A great factor in creating these connections is to have unconditional high regard for our students. They are there to learn and you are there to teach them in ways that they learn. Not everyone learns the same so you cannot teach everyone the same way and expect them all to learn the material. I will teach my students as individuals based on their needs to cultivate positive connections.
