How has it changed how you listen to music?

Reading and learning about Ratliff’s book in class and on my own has better educated me on how to listen to music. It has helped me realize that there are so many other ways to listen to music and the different intensions that musicians have intended for their music and their listeners.

An area I found problematic was the way he used his playlists in a way to help the reader understand the topic of the chapter. Although, it was helpful to help relate the element to music, sometimes Ratliff’s explanations were so in depth that it was hard to follow along and understand.

My favorite aspects of the book was how Ratliff was able to break down each element into different chapters. This made trying to understand an entirely different way of listening to music not such a daunting task to try and understand.

Overall, I think that Ratliff’s book gave me a deeper and more insightful understanding of what it means to actually listen and understand music. It shined light on various aspects of music and how music is viewed in different ways that I didn’t have such a deep knowledge about prior to reading his book.

Introduction:

Throughout these weeks, I have gotten a chance to explore the various aspects of music through Ben Ratliff’s book, Every Song Ever. This Padlet will go into further discussion on how the reading and understand of Ratliff’s book has helped to open up an entirely new world of the listening and understanding of music for me. Before reading this book had had little knowledge of how in depth the practice of truly listening to music goes. It gave me a better understand of the different meaning a musician is trying to tell his story to their listeners and shows how much work goes into all these different musical projects. Also, Ratliff showed through his play lists at the end of each chapter and through explanations of those songs how each musical element has transcended through time and is still relevant to listen to no matter what genre or time period the music is from. All in all, getting a chance to broaden my musical knowledge has been a wonderful experience and given me a greater appreciation of music and those who create it.
