Often times the vein that is effected by this illness is one of the major veins which conducts the majority of blood flow from the legs back to the heart. When effected, the inflicted vein carries a blood clot that obstructs the blood flow within the vein and causes multiple different side effects. Blood thinning medications are often prescribed to help with the clogging of the veins. By thinning out the blood it is more difficult for the blood to clot up. Another medication that may be prescribed is clot busters (thrombolytic). These medications are used to break up clots that are already present in the blood.
Compressors
Stockings that apply pressure to the leg that help conduct the blood so it doesn't pool or clot.
Filters
Filters can be put inside the vein to help make sure there will be no broken off pieces of the clot that travel to the lungs.
