It was either to advise you of a special appointment (I still smile every time I pass the layby in Airdrie into which I pulled over to take the call from you that advised me I was headed to Bratislava on my first European trip), or it was to advise me of another one of my administrative errors (the less said the better). However, it was a call from you back in 2005 that I remember most. I was a Category 2 official trying to do everything possible to create a good impression to gain that cherished promotion. Unfairly, I found myself mentioned on the back page of The Scottish Sun being accused of something a little outrageous. Convinced my refereeing world was imploding, I called you to hear the worst. You calmly advised me not to worry and that, rest assured what was reported today would be no more than tomorrow's fish and chip wrappers. In the grand scheme of things, it may seem like an inconsequential act. However, it demonstrated to me that you cared, you knew your officials and what they were (not) capable of (even the ones who were aspiring, rather than those who were established), and that you were completely in charge of your brief. It goes without saying that you will be a great loss to refereeing in Scotland. Personally, I would like to thank you for all your support over many years. Enjoy your retirement!

I’ve worked with you for over 4 years at the Scottish FA. You gave me the opportunity to start a career within Football. I have learned some valuable skills from you which I will carry with me throughout my career. Your commitment to your role and to the overall organisation is to be very much admired. There has been ups (managing to get through each week ensuring all matches are covered despite what’s thrown at us sometimes late in the day) and downs (almost knocking you out (by accident!) when the wobbly coat stand lost its balance and landed on you! Thankfully there was no harm done, although the person you were on the phone to must have been slightly confused by the outburst of words that followed…). I hope you enjoy your retirement with your family, you deserve some rest after all the hard work you’ve put in on a daily basis over all those years. I’m sure we will still see you around the office from time to time.

Will never forget the call to tell me i'd made Cat 1, i'm sure you thought i'd crashed the car!
The numerous calls which started are you available for an appointment on Wednesday bearing in mind you'd require to be out of country the day before.
I have to admit there have been too many memories to put them all on paper Drew.
It's been a pleasure to have been guided along the way by you and I hope that we will still bump into you at Keith at some point.
Can I wish you a long and healthy retirement, one thing is for sure the refereeing fraternity is losing one of it's unsung heroes.

I was always just delighted to have been thought of. Scottish football has lost a legend. Law, Baxter, Dalgliesh, Crawford Baptie and now Herbertson. Will we ever see their likes again. I doubt it. I would however like to put on record my thanks for all of your help and support in my time as the association secretary. Your knowledge of all things refereeing was and still is very impressive and you were able to guide me whenever I had a problem or needed to know something, it was greatly appreciated.

The Scottish FA's loss is your gain in that you will have more time to relax and enjoy more family time. I have no doubt though that you will continue to be a regular attendee at games and hopefully I'll bump into you at games as I have done previously.

It has always been reassuring to know that no matter the problem or query, whether it be finding a replacement AR for a Junior game ten minutes before kick off on one occasion, or advising me on how to report the fact of a spectator punching a player at a Junior match (!), there will always be a quick and concise answer at the other end of the phone.

I would like to also record my thanks at your support when I was injured having just come onto the list back in 2011. The patience you and the Department showed during my absence was greatly appreciated and without this support I would not have gone on to enjoy the many highlights of my time at Category 3.

Thanks very much for all your support over the years and of course, for the very positive reference to the Irish FA following my move across the water.
Your guidance in all administrative matters certainly kept us on our toes but most importantly, you were on hand to take my call after a severe assault on a player by a player at Dalry.
Liking my statistics, I very much enjoyed your annual summary of the season detailing number of games arranged, number of games postponed or abandoned and some of the wierd and wonderful reasons as to why games had to be rescheduled. It was always a good time to reflect back on my own games and evaluate what I could have done differently.
I wish you a long, healthy and prosperous retirement after many years of service to the SFA.

I'm reading all this guff about how wonderful you are and what a great help and blah blah blah..... You and I know the truth. From Park Circus to Hampden Circus - your job was a dawdle. I mean how difficult can it be dealing with referees, observers, club officials, SFA, SPFL, SJFA - c'mon. A cruise. Everything was always pretty straightforward with no real surprises and a great amount of predictability. OK in the past there were some moments from St Andrews weekends and the odd international trip when some guys might have gotten a wee bit tired and emotional. And maybe the odd fixture changed or you got a very rare call off. And every referee always did their admin on time and got their sanctions right and there was little in the way hassle or confusion amongst the referee development team and its many leaders.
So, what should I say by way of a memory of you. Simply put, I couldn't have done it without you! You are one of the most decent, even-handed, consistently helpful people its been my pleasure to know. I admire your unweilding commitment to Scottish Football and the unique contribution you made to the refereeing fraternity. And I value you both as a friend and a colleague.

It has been an absolute pleasure working alongside you for the last 10 years, a stalwart within the Scottish FA and someone I have personally relied upon on a daily basis for guidance and more importantly friendship.

I was delighted to hear of your retirement because you deserve to enjoy the benefits all your hard labour over the past 37 years of loyal service to the organisation.

Ps, I could sub contract you for a week a year, just to write that end of season note to all the officials.

When initially asked if I wished to add my thoughts, I have to say that my immediate reaction was ‘Yes, No problem’.

However, since then, I struggled to find appropriate words to aptly record my appreciation for what you’ve done, not only for me, but for all of us in the ‘Refereeing Family’.

Nevertheless, from a purely personal perspective.

You assisted and guided me on more occasions than I could possibly recall.

You were never flustered, even when your patience was severely tested.

You supported me with my ideas, yet equally proffering an alternative or a more appropriate solution.

You were always there for me, irrespective of the time of day or night.

You have always been correctly perceived as totally committed to the role.

You have, by retiring, created an almost impossible task for your successors, primarily that of emulating the levels of service and dedication you have provided. Nevertheless, if the service level is anywhere near that what we have experienced from you, then normal service will surely be maintained.

You suffered my dreadful attempts at jokes, but that’s what you deserve for having been at your desk that early in the morning😂

You are a True Gentleman in every sense of the word.

I can remember turning up to referee an important match at Keith and worrying that I was parking not far from the ground but in front of a residents house. I'd just got out of the car and hoped to collect my bag quickly in case the resident came out and shouted at me for parking there. Imagine my surprise when none other than Drew Herbertson came out of the house as it was his father's.
On another occasion in 2003 , I was selected for the Euro finals under 19s in Leichtenstein . Just before going out to be AR for the semi-final a rather attractive female UEFA official came up to me and started asking questions about the man from the SFA with the very sexy voice who was in charge of refereeing and disciplinary . She wished to know in and outs of Drew's appearance , interests etc.. I was looking for more prestigious UEFA appointments so made you out to be the demi god you are.
Most referees will remember where they were when that special appointment came their way ( outside Kirrie Thistle's ground for me getting told of my Sco Cup final ) and you can be proud of a legacy that goes well beyond Scottish Refereeing and the special role you had in so many people's lives and their future aspirations.

The first time I came across you was as an assistant when you played for the SFA staff v English fa staff at Maryhill in 1994. After that I was also more than pleased to receive the phone call of " are you available for an appointment" on more than occasion. However you will never know what it meant to me when you approached me on the pitch after the 2014 cup final to inform me that the decision I gave that day on the goalline was correct. You fully deserve to be honoured with this retirement dinner, and I'm sure you won't be completed lost to the refereeing movement when you are outand about. It has been a great pleasure dealing with you as a Referee (I think the first contact we had was around 1985 when I was on the ‘Supplementary List’ refereeing Highland Youth League) and, since 2005, as a Referee Observer. That Banffshire connection was handy at times as you knew the clubs and many of the people involved in the Highland League. Your knowledge of Scottish football and meticulous attention to detail is going to be a huge loss to everyone involved in the game. I hope you are able to devote the time to do the things you want to do and not be bothered with your phone ringing at 13.55 on a Saturday when the Observer is trying to find where the game is being played!
Maybe see you on the golf course sometime!

Just a short note to offer my congratulations and best wishes on your very well earned retirement. Over 30 years of committed service is a remarkable achievement.

I can only reiterate the sentiments expressed more eloquently elsewhere on this page, conveying gratitude for your support, assistance and encouragement over my years on the senior list. I’ve enjoyed our correspondence and phone calls over the years - it was always good to hear from you with news of an appointment. But your dedicated service extended to officials at all levels of the game. As just one minor example, I recall you taking the time to get in touch with me over a decade ago when I was a Cat 2 to let me know you’d found online highlights of one of my games in the Scottish Junior Cup. Such highlights are very common these days (probably to the dismay of many aspiring referees), but it was certainly something of a novelty back then. Hopefully they're not still available!

I wish you a long, healthy and happy retirement - hopefully our paths will cross again at some point in the future.

Well it goes back to nearly 44 years ago and first year at Heriot Watt University and the beginning of a lifelong friendship. over the decades, we have shared so many great footballing occasions and many of these due to your generosity. Its not just the matches though, but the experience and insight I have gained through you as I have met so many great football people. If I had to pick just one memory though, it would be the Easter Holidays of 1977, when Caley played Keith at Kynoch Park and I had the privilage of meeting your parents. Their hospitality and generosity was matched only by their open and genuine personalities that made me feel within 10 minutes of meeting them that I had known them forever. Caley won 1-0 that day and Colin McDonald, a Keith lad, came off the bench to score the winner, but for once my abiding memory of a Saturday afternoon watching Caley was not of the game but off your parents.
