Kids need different amounts of food, mostly dependant on their age. Through elementary school, kids need anywhere from 1,200 - 2000 calories a day. During this time, it is important for kids to get vitamins like magnesium and more calcium to help them grow. Magnesium is needed to reduce stress and regulate sleep patterns (Natural Calm Canada). Calcium is needed to prevent osteoporosis in later years of life. (University of Georgia) Whole grains and milk are great sources of these. Elementary children are going through a big growth spurt during these years so it is important they receive the nutrients from food they need. Children should eat about 1/4 of their daily nutrition at breakfast, this will help them perform better during the school day.

Ideal Snack For Elementary Kids

Children who are still in elementary school should be getting the right amount of calories and nutrition in order for them to grow healthy and strong. Especially kids who are active should have enough fuel for and after whatever sport or activity they are doing. Snacks are a quick way to energize kids throughout the day. It is important that the snack should include potassium, vitamin E, fiber and proteins. An ideal snack to make sure you get all of these nutrients is to make a homemade or healthy store bought Trail Mix and some yogurt or milk. Trail mix is a good way, because it contains nuts as protein and fruits for vitamins also granola for fiber. Milk and yogurt will provide potassium and calcium to the kids. The total calories for this quick snack would be around 300 calories.

An important part to a child's day is exercise. Childhood obesity is becoming a growing issue and a great way to prevent it is playing sports or just playing physical games in the backyard, along with a proper diet (https://www.health.ny.gov/prevention/nutrition/resources/obparnts.htm).

To create a healthy homemade trail mix, you would need: any type of nuts/protein which would be like peanuts, cashews, almonds, walnuts ect. Now for the fiber you can choose granola, but make sure it is healthy and low in sugar. You will also need fruits which are typically dried and with this you can choose whatever is your favorite.
