The British were charging up Bunker Hill, and at the top the colonists were defending the bunker at the top of the hill, hence the name. Major General William Howe and Brigadier General Robert Pigot led around 2,200 British troops on the attack, while only 1,000 colonist soldiers were defending the bunker under command of Colonel William Prescott.
