Sleep and School Times by Lauren Mecseji

Recently, for example, high schools have begun moving their start times to a later hour in the morning to accommodate these adolescent sleep needs. Schools that have taken this step report better attendance. However, this measure often causes a logistical problem with busing young children in the predawn hours. In addition, later school start times may restrict teens’ abilities to participate in sports or to hold after-school jobs. Nevertheless, the findings from studies of adolescent sleep needs led U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-California) to propose the ZZZ’s to A’s Act in March 2001. The act was designed to encourage school districts to delay school start times until after 9 a.m. by providing federal grants of up to $25,000 to cover the administrative and operating costs associated with making this transition. Do you support such a bill? Do you wish that your schools had started later? What do you see as the pros and cons?

So, I’d just keep school starting at like 8 or like 8:15. I feel as though those are good options.

I do not think 8:30 is that early for school to start. I think an alternative would would shorter school days because an 8 hour day is long for most student. So I would suggest shorter school days and then you could start later and still end by 3:30

I agree with it for the health of the students. If schools decided to cut out study period, we would be able to have students and schools start later and have their activities during the study period. I wish they started later because I had games late at night or practice till late and had homework. Starting later would have allowed me to get the sleep I needed. Pros would be kids getting to sleep more. Cons would be getting everyone on board. It would take a lot of work and time.

It doesn't have to be anything dramatic like 10:00 AM, but even just 8:45 AM gives the students that extra bit of sleep. For sports, I would just push them back because they would only run about an hour behind. You could also cut out a period of the day in your schedule to accommodate for this. Or shorten certain class times.

I would not support the bill of having school start an hour or so later than 8. Being in sports throughout high school, I would do anything to have an earlier practice and to get it done as early as possible because I had other things to do too. As much as I would love to push school back for an hour or so to sleep in, it would ruin routines and make the day longer for athletes.

I do not support this because the later the kids get to sleep in, the less they develop a routine of being productive in the morning. After college, we won’t all have the option to start our day at 9 am every morning, and I feel this allows the kids to believe that and get the wrong idea. This also causes other activities to be pushed back which creates a later night for student athletes or those involved in extra curricular activities. From my own experiences, on game days I wouldn’t get home until 9 pm and that’s when we started school at 8:15 in the morning. I think pushing these things back will really affect students because they will be less likely to do school work after they get home, and more likely to spend their morning hours oversleeping or not being productive.

Yes, I support this bill because I think it would be more beneficial for students. I think that it would allow kids to feel more revived in the morning and in a better mood to learn, rather than being tired and unmotivated. When I was in highschool the start time got moved back 30 minutes and I personally thought it was a good decision. Being a student who lived further away from my school this allowed for me to get more time in the mornings. However, some cons to this is as you said later practices for students in activities and a less flexible schedule for students who have after school jobs. Despite that though I think it could still be manageable.

If starting school at a later time but still going the full 8 hour length, I personally don’t think this is a good idea due to other extra circular activities and health reasons. Although children may be getting to sleep in, with activities getting pushed even farther back to a later time they wouldn’t be getting home till later. On top of that still needing to get their homework done as well as having a social life. With that said in the end they are still going to most likely get the same amount of sleep as beforehand.

If a student needs more sleep, they should go to bed earlier. For those students who aren’t in sports, they wouldn’t be able to get an after-school job because they’d be stuck in school until businesses were closed, OR they would have to work even later than they already do. If students need to go to bed earlier, there’s other ways to help.
For example:
-get out of practice on time
-don’t give so much homework
-don’t allow school activities to go past 9
There are so many other options that don’t involved a huge change that will affect every school.

No, I do not support this bill. Parents normally have to be at work at 8AM so it gives them time to drop off their kids and not have a daycare provider for that hour or so before school starts. Also, if they start later, everything goes longer in the day and they do not have time for other "non school" related activities which some families may find very important (religious groups). I think an appropriate time for school to start is around 8AM. It prepares the children/youth for jobs in the later years.

It doesn’t make too much of a difference to me. If it got moved later that time slot could be filled with sports practice early in the morning thus still making kids get up earlier. In my experience I had an extracurricular activity almost every morning before school, sports practice after school, and depending on the time of year musical/play rehearsal after that. (We were always tired and it didn’t matter when school started). For a child who is not involved in anything it sounds like a good plan but for someone who is involved in sports or extracurricular, they would most likely still get up early for various activities whether that be sports or extracurricular.

As for the kids who are in athletics they get to spend their 8th hour class to have practice. If they need to lift weights they can replace P.E. I think it is good for the students to have them wake up earlier to good, and it promotes going to bed earlier as well. At some points I did wish school started later when I was in high school, but honestly I would rather go earlier and get out earlier than go later in the morning and get out later during the day. Plus, with getting out later, it pushes sports and activities after school to go later than they already do. Getting more sleep could seem like a pro, but if you go to bed earlier you can still get that extra hour of sleep.

Yes, I think schools should try to push back start times. This is because a lot of research has been done to show the human brain doesn't even fully "wake up" until around 9-10 a.m (depending on age), especially if they has just woken up and gone straight to school. Another reason is because many students in high school have jobs and trying to balance all of that in one day with a social life, homework, and family is nearly impossible. Many students are forced to stay up late to complete their responsibilities which makes is very hard to wake up at 7 am every morning.
