New link: https://padlet.com/bkatrina39/tpdlzs94enwz

Katrina, the link uploaded on the iCollege was not working. Please update the link so that Dr. Ari and I can access from the iCollege. Also, you may need to re-organize your padlet. You can visit other classmates’ padlets and get an idea how to organize your threads. Make only a one thread for each STEP so that it looks clean and is easy to follow. Also, PLEASE DO NOT ERASE my comments on your padlet. It is important to see how you develop your steps from the draft to the final version and see how you reflect comments on your final draft.

Your STEP3 requires a picture of the problem showing in a simplified form the main variables, parameters, elements and how these relate to each other. Do not forget to contain this for your final draft. Second, please check your spellings and punctuations throughout the posting. I noticed some minor mechanical errors. You chose ‘education’ as the most important disciplines of yours. Be more specific here. What education you are mentioning? Education psychology? Or Family and Community literacy education? We will see different disciplines in this class and I suggest you to choose your disciplines from what we have or will learn in this class. Also, you will need more explanations on how your chosen disciplines are relevant to your problem. Lastly, your draft did not contain any insights from your site visit. Please include insights you have from your interview and observation. Provide some information about the site as well.

2.1 The student states that the problem or research question is complex and explains what this means.

The problem or research question is complex because, no one person can solve this mystery, along with more intensive research and figuring out what is causing this effect on children mentally, even though we are dealing with emotions and behavior we still need to dig a little deeper to determine the cause/effect method. Figuring out the triggers, what is more at stake, the emotions/behavior, etc. Assessments, classroom management, observations, and parent-teacher conferences can be resources that can be put forth to help with dealing with EBD disorders in children. We can look at another discipline: Counseling, it’s one of the most important tools to use, working together with a professional and training from an outside source is applicable to help with this disorder.

2.2 The student states or implies that there are important insights into the problem offered by two or more disciplines.

There are important insights into the problem offered by two or more disciplines. Psychologist and counseling would be the two disciplines to consult in this matter because they both getting into the what’s, why’s, who’s, and how of evaluating the child emotional/behavior state. They will ask for evaluations from the parents/family, educators, etc. to connect the dots and get to the root of the problem. Getting involved with children that have any kind of disabilities is a delicate situation, defenses can get in the way of helping the child and to derive at the problem we must communicate with each other.

2.3 The student states or implies that no single discipline has been able to address the problem comprehensively.

There has been no single discipline that has been proven to address the problem with EBD disorder, only interventions, programs, professionals, and therapy can be beneficial to treat the disorder. EBD Disorder is cross the border disorder because it constitutes other disorders such as: mood disorder, anxiety, schizophrenia, and depression. With the proper treatment/therapy it can be manageable, also the severity can include medication.

2.4 The student states that the project addresses an important and yet unresolved issue concerning nature or society.

EBD Disorder does addresses important/unresolved issues concerning nature or society because we are affect by many things in our society that stresses us out and keep us in the loop of uncertainty. Our emotions/behaviors are brought on by the environment/community we live in, it affects our well-being and therefore it makes us behave in an inappropriate manner, whether it be positive/negative behavior. Statistics shows that 26% of American ages 18 and older, about 1 in4 adults stuffers from a diagnosable mental disorder and many suffer from more than one at a given time. http://hopkinsmedicine.org/healthlibrary/conditions/mental_health_disorders/mental_health_disorder_statistics_85,p00753

3.1 The student identifies the disciplines potentially relevant to the problem.

The disciplines are relevant to the problem because when a child’s emotional behavior is at state it’s developmentally something disturbing going on. It’s not brain related but psychologically related due to emotions not being in their proper state. Emotional disorder can come from many sources such as: neglect, experience of physical abuse, over stimulation of certain activities, environment, or parental stress. EBD disorder are a broad spectrum across the broader of other disabilities such as Conduct Disorder which look at the child social behavior, one that is aggressive toward people of authority, Oppositional Disorder is somewhat related to conduct disorder but not as aggressive and it more of argumentative with others, express anger often. EBD is still ongoing in research. To view a child with just more than emotional/behavioral issues is far from the problem that he/she might be experiencing because it could be any disorder that is tied into this one category, children need to be given the opportunity to express themselves, with proper interventions, family support, and guidance they can do it without labeling and criticism. One finding about EBD is that children/youth in the African American community have been defined as being the number one ethnicity group with having EBD, children have been placed in special education due to a certain disability category. It has been estimated that 2.88 black children than white children to be labeled as have some type of disability and 1.92 to having emotional/behavioral disorder another statistic is children with EBD take all their courses in special education settings/classrooms, and most children even attend alternative schools which are for at risk children. In addition to EBD, many other factors make this disorder complex because these children seem to fall into a category of selflessness, self-worth, and low self-esteem because they are labeled on so many levels. As a community we must help them define their self-worth so they may be able to function in society as adults. Doing my site visit I gained a lot of information about children and how they can learn from any given situation especially when it’s a positive situation, watching a child and listening to his responses were incredible considering the information that was given beforehand. Bringing his reading comprehension skills up by three grade levels, his self-worth was discovered by him that he could do anything he put his mind to, even with some emotional/behavioral issues that wasn’t the vocal point, the instructors and the whole team just showed him patience, love and hope.

4.1 The student reports that the literature search confirms the identity of the disciplines and their insights that are most relevant to the problem.

The literature search confirms the identity of the disciplines that I researched. EBD is linked to two important disciplines: Education and Psychology. The biggest focus was on education because that's my field of study. I have a passion for children and their well-being. EBD disorder affects a lot of our children and its beginning to take a toll on the academics. Teachers have to learn and implement strategies for children with EBD and stop dismissing them from the classroom. I've researched ways to implement these types of strategies: keep rules/activities simples, reward positive behavior, fair treatment to all to name a few. Children need to know that someone care and is willing to have the patience to help them. With intensive research I also gathered information about music therapy that has been useful with treating EBD disorders, even though little information on the specifics involved in applying music therapy is relevant. There are many disorders that is associated with EBD: Anxiety disorder, depression, mood disorder, and schizophrenia. I didn't include biology but it is another discipline that came up while I was researching EBD disorder, according to the research biological and genetic causes for EBD are being identified, research tells us that there is a definite relationship that exist between prenatal drugs exposure and childhood EBD disorders, 53% of drug exposed participants in Head Start Preschool Programs are identified as having these disabilities early in kindergarten. Also the community has to get involve and participate to influence the growth and development of our children, what's that saying: It takes a village to raise our children. Family support is always a plus to help our children succeed and become productive adults.. Our school community is the next best thing to home, children rely on their teachers just as much as anyone else, teachers has to set the stage for the performance, our children are our future, and most of all we have to take steps to prevent EBD disorders, we can't cure it but we can make life a little better by taking the first step to identifying the emotions and behaviors, when children act differently from their normal behavior that's when a cause for concern should be discussed, bring in the professional, parents, teacher, counselors, etc. to help our children. We can succeed together and raise healthy, happy, successful children. One person can't fix this we have to be on the same page, collaborate with each other and move forward.
References:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
hthhttp://journals.sagepub.com/ttp://
https://www.nytimes.com/
https://www.scientificamerican.com/
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/
https://www.annualreviews.org/https:/
https://www.tandfonline.com/

I'm having trouble loading my chart.
thank you.

**As of 12:03 am 7/2/2018, no posting for STEP 4 draft***
Late submission (-2.5 pts of deduction will be applied to your final grade)

Thanks for the posting, Katrina. Please note that as your posting missed our deadline, -2.5 pts will be deducted from your final grade. Although you have a good start, some important components are missing from your draft. First, you need to cite your references and attach a full reference list at the end. You have all good information but there is no citation so I am not sure what resources/scholars you are referring to. I am sure you learn how to search your research resources and you already know about this, but if you don’t, you can go https://scholar.google.com/ and search topics. You will always get better search results from the university library but if you are at home or outside of the campus, this can be a good alternative search engine. Once you have all resources, don’t forget to make a data management table and add an APA style reference list. https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/1/ This website will give you an idea of how to cite resources in APA style. Second, you need to provide insights from at least two Play posit videos. Pick two videos that relate to your project and provide your insights from the video on your final draft..

Please note that if you miss these components (4.2, 4.3, 4.4) in your final draft, you will get a zero for these components. So make it sure to have all these components in your final draft. We are making progress slowly but surely, so let’s plan to succeed in this project!

Katrina, this is a comment for your updated STEP3 draft. Compared to the one you submitted earlier, this has been so much improved! For the perfect grade, I made few suggestions and hope these are helpful. First, you identified your possible disciplines and explained about why they are needed. Nice job on this! However, you still need to narrow down your disciplines and think about how to apply them in your project. You can keep all possible disciplines you mentioned but you need to explain and connect your choice of disciplines to your research more tight. Second, your site visit insights missed the information about the site and the interview. Where did you visit and who did you interview? And what was the process? Provide some information about your experience in your final draft.

Thank you for the feedback, upon your observation of Step 4. I added the resources but I'm having trouble downloading or uploading my data chart. I've learned a lot form researching my topic. Watching the play poist were informative, it got me the thinking about my next move in the program, I especially enjoyed the topic on Growth & Development, its my passion. Dr. Kon's explaining the situation with her daughter about mutism, some children just take a little longer to adapt to their environment or cultural surroundings and another video I enjoyed was Behavioral and Learning Disabilities, Kathleen described in depth about this discipline, I work for the Head Start Program and I could relate to this topic first hand, especially her passion about children getting kicked out of school and missing out on their education, bridging the gap to end this cycle is needed because I see it everyday and its not helping the child or the teacher. Both are frustrated and need help to understanding the problem. We need to more patience and have compassion for each other and the students, working together to stop this cycle is something I would be on board for. Education is number one.

The disciplines that I am really passionate about is Growth & Development (Education) and Behavioral & Learning Disabilities (Psychology). The importance of a child growth starts at the beginning and it helps them to develop normally at the age levels, child need to be talked to, to understand language, etc. During my site visit I interviewed Adam & Laura both site directors, and also one of the instructors Hayley. When asked how they would incorporate interdisciplinary in their studies. Adam said: they really don't have any children with behavioral/emotional issues but they have a team of professionals that they consult with about certain things that may need to be addressed. They consult with psychologist, behavior specialist, counselor, parents, colleagues, etc. They basically work with children/adult to help them in the area of literacy.

Step 5 I took a different path in research my discipline, EBD is what I’m researching but because it’s such a broad subject and it expands in various aspects of education, I thought I might start with children with EBD in the inclusive environment. I work with children and I see that its becoming more and more available to children with disabilities not only with EBD but with other problems. I research a paper/article written by a graduate student from Southern Illinois University, Naomi E. Carbondale. She went into depth about this process and sorted out some very important causes/effects that has been addressed about this situation. All children should be given the opportunity to get an education. There have been many changes and progress has been made regarding inclusive learning, programs/interventions have been put in place to service our children with disabilities, such as The No Child Left Behind Act, IDEIA, RTI, & PBIS Services. These programs have been implemented to assist/help our educators and to provide behavioral support as well as emotional support for academic success for our students. This movement has improved and has become popular to ensure that children with disabilities are not separated from the general education environment.

If you do not meet the word limit, points will be taken off from your final draft. Second, you need to bring insights from two playposit videos you watched. Make it sure to contain names of videos in your final draft. You also need to post an expanded resource table with contains key insights discussed in class. Did you turn in your table in class? If you did, please let me know.

One last important comment is that you need to implement and reflect these comments IN YOUR FINAL DRAFT NOT IN YOUR REFLECTION. I have noticed that you answered to my comments in your reflection. Please avoid that as the feedback is for your final draft to be better.

Step 6 6.1 The student explains how an interdisciplinary approach challenged her bias on the problemThe disciplinary approach challenged my bias on the problem because during my research on children with EBD Disorder and how they function in a classroom setting was more than I could understand once I started researching, I didn’t know about all the programs/interventions that was included to make this a success, the different laws that schools had to abide by to make sure each child had access to getting an education, steps that had to be taken to ensure that children with EBD could be in inclusive classrooms ,etc.6.2 The student explains how an interdisciplinary approach has influenced her perception of disciplinary expertise.Interdisciplinary approach has influences my perception of disciplinary expertise. The two disciplines that I research was Education & Psychology. Education was more of a broad spectrum because it consists of strategies that had to followed and considered for the sake of the children, the curriculum had to be adjusted, the scheduling, time management, engaging, assessments, evaluations, and co-existing with another staff & faculty. Whereas, with Psychologists they provide school-based practices, individualized care, and family centered services, this help with the role changes that take place to help the children.6.3 The student explains how an interdisciplinary approach has enlarged her understanding of the problem. The interdisciplinary approach has enlarged my understanding of the problem because I learned a lot about EBD Disorder. I work with a lot of children that seems to be going through this kind of disorder. At my job, the Behavioral Specialist is in the classrooms constantly because a child is having a tough time with whatever is going on and we sometimes look at it as though: He’s just a bad kid or he/she don’t like to be told what to do but researching this topic gave me a better prospected on what might be going on with this child. I can now look at it and examine things in a unique way. This child may need help, my help.6.4 The student explains how an interdisciplinary approach is applicable beyond the classroomInterdisciplinary approach is applicable beyond the classroom because you can extend your research and use it in other varies ways such as in a training session, collaborate with friends, families, co-workers, etc. talk to experts about your intake/opinion, learn new techniques to implement with your peers, and use other resources that can help someone else that may be struggle with a child/relative with EBD disorder.
