I used Sara Stevenson's article in KnowledgeQuest (9/12/2017) to support offering graphic novels to our middle school ESL students. We also use audiobooks as readalong support. I do a lot of cheerleading and encouraging, too :)

Weekly read aloud, in English, to grades K-2 and classroom support in grades 3-5. Classroom supports includes pulling relevant books for curriculum, scheduled times in the library for lessons dealing with English Language Arts, additional library times for exploring databases, as well as collecting e-books and book sets for the classroom's small reading groups. These offerings are selected based on students levels of language acquisition. I also have after school book clubs and activities. Our school is Title 1, 92%+ bilingual ESL/ELL.

I have books available in Spanish, Hmong, and Somali, roughly proportional to the population we serve. The kids can read in their home languages with family members and in their Spanish bilingual classes. One of the coolest things I have seen is non-Somali students checking out the Somali Board books and dictionaries, then sitting side-by-side with their newcomer Somali classmates, sharing vocabulary in both languages. At a parent meeting, the Somali parents were impressed and felt so appreciative that we considered their language important enough to include in our collection. The kids are taking the books home to teach their parents to read.

We have a large Spanish-speaking population, and and when I started, only 3 books in Spanish! I've used surveys to learn student interests and slowly built up the collection to about 150 books now. Having the ELs involved gave them ownership of the library.
