Uh, What Does Literacy Have To Do With Math?

At the beginning of this course, I had little knowledge of how important literacy was for all subjects, not just in a language arts style classroom. I thought in the math classroom as long as the students understand numbers, then they will be fine in the classroom. In all honesty, I had no real idea what literacy had to do with mathematics. Throughout the semester, I have learned different literacy strategies to help students in the classroom build knowledge and understanding over the overall concepts and terminology while making real world connections that make the topics relevant to their learning (Introduction, n.d.).

Funds Of Knowledge in the Classroom

Before this course, I didn’t take into consideration the role of students’, families’, and communities’ cultural knowledge and skills may have in a student’s learning. I already knew that everyone has their own background of skills and knowledge from their culture and experiences, but I never thought about including those skills into a lesson in the classroom. Using a student’s funds of knowledge will help students make real world connections to the lesson while showing off their expertise and will be more likely for the students to engage in the lesson because it is something they are interested in.

We Use Math Every Day!

When we were assigned to do a presentation on our own funds of knowledge, I was at a complete loss. I couldn’t think of something that I was good at that I could eventually incorporate into a math lesson. As I was baking cookies at home, I made the connection! My presentation will be about my skills and knowledge about baking that I have gained since I was 5 years old in both my personal life as well as from culinary school. Baking could easily be incorporated into a math lesson regarding the price of objects to make a profit, how to measure out ingredients for a recipe and how to increase or cut a recipe in half.

Literacy and Technology

With changing times and newer technology coming into existence on the daily, it is important to incorporate these technology strategies into the classroom to keep up with the times while also keeping older procedures in place. With math, it is important for students to write down the processes and handwrite their notes because students who handwrite them have better retention of the material than those who type them (Terada, 2020). With these strategies in mind, when writing the lesson plans for this course, I was thinking of ways that could both incorporate the use of technology while also maintaining handwritten notes for students to comprehend the material better by having the students handwrite their notes in class and then upload a picture of their notes for the teacher to see that they were participating in class, have notes on their profiles for easy access, and will also allow parents to see what work their students are doing (Digital, 2017). By incorporating both technology and old school classroom styles, students will be able to retain the information better while also keeping up with the changing times.

As a Future Educator...

This course has taught me a lot about the different types of literacy that are involved in the classroom to help students learn. Writing lesson plans based on students’ funds of knowledge and students who are emergent bilinguals helped me realize the differentiation strategies that will need to be in place to help give every student an equal opportunity to learn the material no matter their language. By integrating a students’ interests into a lesson and providing materials that will help students learn to the best of their ability will help increase a student’s engagement and involvement in their own learning as it brings “real-world purposes for learning” (Brozo, 2017, pg. 174). As a future educator, it is my job to teach each and every student of all backgrounds, provide strategies to help students learn the curriculum to give them all an equal opportunity to learn and succeed, all while also making connections between the lesson topics and life outside the classroom walls.
