I cambiamenti climatici stanno avendo dei notevoli impatti sia sugli ecosistemi che sui sistemi socio-economici, come precisato nella Prima comunicazione nazionale sui cambiamenti climatici (2004)
 
 Ad esempio, i raccolti di riso, uno degli alimenti chiave della popolazione del Sud-Est asiatico, secondo lo studio risulterebbero dimezzati entro la fine del secolo se non si agirà in qualche modo per contenere il riscaldamento globale. Ciò avrebbe anche un impatto economico-finanziario, in quanto si renderebbero necessarie molte più importazioni alimentari dall'estero. Altri rischi citati dal report, poi, segnalano la maggiore incidenza delle morti legate all'innalzamento delle temperature e alla proliferazione delle malattie trasmesse dalle zanzare. Anche il settore della pesca risulterebbe colpito dal crescente sbiancamento delle barriere coralline, il quale minaccia a sua volta la fauna ittica che dipende da esse.
