"“The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and his dreadfully provoked: his wrath towards you burns like fire; He looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the fire; He is of purer eyes than to bear to have you in His sight; you are ten thousand times more abominable in His eyes than the most hateful venomous serpent is in ours.” (108)

Edward uses vivid imagery to convey his idea that non-Protestants or even non-devout ones will be punished for their lack of faith. He uses a simile to compare that God views us in the same way that we view the worst creature on the face of the earth.
There is also a recurring symbol of spiders and fire throughout the sermon.

"The wrath of God is like great waters that are dammed for the present; they increase more and more, and rise higher and higher, till an outlet is given; and the longer the stream is stopped, the more rapid and mighty is its course, when once it is let loose." (108)

Edward creates the image of cursed waters by placing an emphasis on words like stream, floods, waters, and floodgate in his sermon. He continues by comparing God's wrath to the cursed waters, expressing God has a large amount of pent up anger that is just waiting to be released when "an outlet is given", the outlet being the subjects of hell.
