The Olympic Games are international multi-sport events. They happen every four years for either Summer or Winter sports. There are team and individual competitions and events. Traditionally, the first place winner in an overall competition wins a gold medal. The second place competitor wins a silver medal, and the third place finisher gets a bronze medal. Nearly every country in the world sends at least one athlete or team of athletes to the site of the Olympics, and the host countries vary each year.

What is a boycott? How did this play a role in the 1980 and 1984 Olympics? Who hosted and who would not come?

Boycotting is when you don’t participate in something. The 1980 Olympics were held in the USSR. Because of the COld War, the USA boycotted it. 4 years later, the 1984 Olympics were being held in the USA. Just like what the US had done earlier, the USSR boycotted the Olympics that year.

The reason the US was boycotting the Olympics was because of the USSR invading Afghanistan a year earlier. The US didn't support what the USSR was doing, and many countries boycotted that year with them.

The Olympics were interrupted by 11 israeli athletes and coaches were killed. Also, there was some very bad officiating that caused the USSR to beat the USA in the championship basketball game. The USA was so offended by the poor officiating that they refused to tke the second-place silver medals they were given, feeling like they were cheated out of gold that they thought they desereved.

The Cold War was an political disagreement and rivalry between mainly the US and the Soviet Union. It happened after WW2, because the US and Allies believed that the world's countries should have democratic governments, while the USSR and their allies/territiories thought that countries should have communist governments. However, there wasn't any actual physical fighting or military engagement.

What are 3 ways the Olympics created a competition between the US and USSR?

I think that these were three ways the Olympics created a competition between the US and USSR:
1: There was a scoreboard, and a winner to each event. This was like a direct scoreboard between Communism and Democracy.
2: People at home could see who was winning more events. This might make them feel a sense of pride for their country and the way they ran their government, so that they would support it more.
3: Everyone in other countries could see who won and who was better, and see which country was succeding more. The US and USSR might have wanted smaller countries to be influenced by them winning events, and that might have made them see which government was having more success.

What 3 comparisons could be made in the Cold War Olympics to present day Olympics?

Here are three comparisons between what the Olympics were like in the Cold war and what they are like today:
1: Both the Cold War and Present Day Olympics had many countries throughout the world compete. This shows that many athletes still want to compete and continue the tradition of the Olympics.
2: However, I think that today the Olympics are a lot less big of a deal throughout the world than they were back then. The USA and USSR had a huge rivalry during the Cold War, which drew in a lot of attention. But, I think that there is a lot less worldwide attention for the Olympics today.
3: A last difference between Olympics is that the USSR does not compete anymore, it is now just Russia. The USSR had a lot more land back then, and now Russia, while still ebign huge, is a lot smaller.
