For the month of January, I read through Anne Frank's Diary, The following quote shows the theme of the story that when hiding from an army you must be brave and confident even if there are others being taken. The diary quotes "I expect I should be describing what it feels like to go into hiding. But I really don't know yet myself. I only know it's funny never to be able to go outdoors... never to breathe fresh air... never to run and shout and jump." (The Diary of Anne Frank, Act 1) Paragraph 148. The character saying this quote is Anne Frank writing it in her diary, the reason for her writing this in her diary is to show the tone of the story. The tone of Anne is uncomfortable because she is in a new place with people she doesn't know and doesn't know if they can be trusted. Anne puts in her diary like writing about how it feels to be hiding in secret and how it feels to be in a small area for a living. Within the story it changes every scene, in the first scene it talks about how Anne's family with Mr and Mrs. Van Daan with their son Peter feel about hiding within an attic and have limited supplies and limited time when they can have fun. In the second scene it would show they are getting used to the small area and know what they are doing when workers in the factory are inside and below them they need to be quiet. In the third scene they start getting to know everyone in the attic. Mr and Mrs. Van Daan along with Peter and Anne's family Mr and Mrs. Frank, and Margot would like each other very much and get along nicely. In scene four the workers below them have left the building and everyone was free of being silent and they can finally eat supper and laugh at jokes without worrying. In scene four it also talks about how the outside world is getting worse with bombers flying over the town and listening to the radio they are terrified of what may happen if they found the attic and drag them to a concentration camp. Everyone was having a great time until in scene five it quoted "He is about to blow out the candle when suddenly there is a crash of something falling below. They all freeze in horror, motionless." (The Diary of Anne Frank, Act 1) Paragraph 131. The characters would act terrified and they would pray to God, creator of the universe to protect them when they heard something below them crash. Mr. Frank would go downstairs and look at what happened. Mr. Frank said it was a thief robbing the store below them but left when Anne passed out in fear. This scene had the family and Van Daan's in fear and were all silent never to talk about it after that day. After they were left in terror, Anne would sing the song for Hanukkah and everyone would celebrate it while singing. To be continued...
