It depends if musicians can live on music alone because if the musician makes a great song that people love, they will get a lot of money from downloads, etc. They can also perform the song live which the musician will also get a huge amount of money from. There are many people who make one hit song, and make tons of money from that song, and live off of that money, by the likes of Silento (Whip/Nae Nae), Aqua (Barbie Girl), Big Shaq (Mans Not Hot), PSY (Gangnam Style) and many more. They are called one-hit wonders. But it is a different story if your song doesn't get much fame or people don't like that song that you have composed. You won't get much money and it would be hard to live off only a little bit of money. Therefore, you would have to do another job while composing music, like: acting, commercials, etc. Even some of the most famous musicians today had to do other jobs while starting their music career by the likes of: Beyonce, Kanye West, etc. (Shout out to Gail... i think. I heard it in class). It also depends on fame. The more fans and haters you have, the more views on your music video, more downloads, etc. If you aren't that popular, the less fans and haters or just people who listen to your music, less views and downloads, etc. In conclusion, I think only famous talents or one-hit wonders or just people who produce and compose good music that their fans love can live on music alone.

Musicians cannot live on music alone because money does not come in just selling CD's or music downloads because you always need to think of what if. You need to think of how good is the song and do you think that it will do good then you release it. If they sell a lot of CD's and downloads then they will get so little money and if you get 12 cents per album or download and you sell a million you will only get a little more than 100 000 dollars. It is a lot of money but it will take a very long time to sell that many and if your song sucks then you probably won't even get half a million buys. That is the problem with the business. You will have really bad sells and really good ones. That is why you can't always count on succession. It definitely will not always happen. Many people don't make it to the top right away so it takes time. You might have a few jobs before to get you some money. I feel like you can really accomplish with the music industry but it definitely takes time.

In my opinion musicians can not live on music only because it does not always pay well. For example you might have a couple really great songs, which pay a lot, but some of them won't even make 800 listens. Out side of your music career you should have another good paying job just enough to buy food and pay for shelter. now a days even if you have a few great songs not all of the money goes to the artist as we learned in class only 12 percent of profits goes to the artist. in conclusion I don't think that musicians can live on money alone

In my opinion, Musicians cannot live on music alone for many reasons. Even if the musician makes a brilliant song that is very popular, the artist only gets 13% of the benefits. Also, many times there is very few songs that become popular, so it would be safer for the musician to have another job to pay for the bills, such as Beyoncé, who worked at a hair salon, Elvis Presley, who was a truck driver and Kanye west, who worked at a Gap clothing store.(Thank you Gail) Even the bigger Stars, at one point had a job before they took off in the music Industry. So, in conclusion, Musicians cannot live off of they're music career alone.

Info from: https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=who+gets+paid+in+the+music+industry&FORM=HDRSC2
https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=who+gets+paid+in+the+music+industry&FORM=HDRSC2

They will not get all the money from disc sales either, they will only get about 12 % of the profit. Also not many songs get popular so people have to really work hard to get a song out there and even once it is you might not get enough money to manage yourself. A musician should get s second job to manage themselves until they gain enough money to survive only with music

Musicians can live on music alone. They can live on music alone because they only get around %12 of the money made from CDs. Now a days, not a lot of people buy CDs because you can download music now. You can also watch music videos on YouTube because YouTube pays the artist/band $0.25 per 100 view,$2.50 per 1000 views and $25 every 10k views. They also get even more money by ads and likes. If an artists music gets broadcasted on a Radio channel their music will get more popular and people will probably watch it on YouTube. An artist can get paid more from copyrights laws.

(JUST BECAUSE PADLET OVER HERE DIDN'T LET ME EDIT MY LAST THINGIE THING ARGH) No, in my opinion, musicians can not live on music alone. Well, it really depends on the artist her/himself.They might be able to create great songs, but since no one listens to them, or not many people have heard of them, they don't become popular, and they cannot make profit from their songs. You's have to make amazing songs, then maybe, you might become a one-hit wonder (Tiago, I'm not trying to copy you..). If you're lucky, then you'd be able to make plenty more songs, become even more famous, then probably be able to live off your music career with all that money you're making. But like most one-hit wonders, you'll still make music, but not as many people will notice it, and it wouldn't be as popular as your fist song. As for the less popular artists, they most likely have a second (or third) job. Famous artists, had second jobs, too. Like Elvis Presley, who was a truck driver before he became famous. Or Gwen Stefani who worked at Dairy Queen. Oh, and Art Garfunkel (from Simon & Garfunkel), who just so happened to be a math teacher. It all added up to hard work. Nowadays, new artists can upload their music to places like YouTube, ITunes, Spotify, Google Play, SoundCloud, Vimeo, and more. It really just depends.

Artists' Old Jobs Website: http://www.nme.com/photos/28-boring-day-jobs-musicians-did-before-they-were-famous-1427661

Oh, and also this one: http://www.thecavanproject.com/51-jobs-musicians-had-before-they-were-famous/

Can musicians live on music alone?
In my opinion It depends. Why? Because If music is your passion. You can live on it. but if you do it just as a hobby you have to study something in which you really love and want to do, not often what you want is achieved . But if you do it with passion and struggle until you see your dream come true. You will be an example for others.
Being a non-conformist musicians may be the best thing that can happen to you, because that is how successful mega artists are.

Some professional musicians got where they are today due to the fact that they struggled to get other work, or just weren’t capable of doing anything else. When you have no Plan B to fall back on, Plan A will have to be what works out for you. In an interview I did with violinist Jenny Scheinman earlier this year, she described moving out of the house at age 16 and busking around Santa Cruz to make ends meet. Though this alone will not guarantee you a successful music career, it sure is a good motivator to get started.
