The town is described repeatedly as "a street in hell" and the people who inhabit it "ghostly" and "spectral wretches". Wolfe is faced by a "hellish temptation", a "fierce devils whisper in his ear", that serves to portray the greedy and selfish side of human nature that is often associated with the Devil.

Another example of symbolism is the setting; the town where Wolfe resides is parallel to the desolate, despairing life of a factory worker. The condition is often described as "smoky" which takes a heavy toll on the citizens who occupy it, "breathing from infancy to death and air saturated with fog and grease and soot..."(2)

Davis sets up a description of setting using smoke, saying, "The idiosyncrasy of this town is smoke."(2) Smoke represents a lack of clarity and a sense of misdirection in life. In saying, "Smoke everywhere!"(2) Davis is reflecting Wolfe's lack of clarity and hopelessness in his life to smoke all over the town.

The quaker, who visits Wolfe in jail, also shows hope for Wolfe after his death in her description of where Wolfe is buried. His burial place is where “the winds of God blow all the day” (28), the location where Wolfe is being laid to rest shows the quaker’s hope for Wolfe in afterlife.
