Subject: A new light upon the current exam assessment

Greetings Professor Deconinck

I am Ludivine Vits a student at the VUB and more specifically I am enrolled in the Bachelor for Applied Linguistics.

I come to you with a very particular proposal, as we all know exams can be very tough and hard on students and to be completely honest I do not think it is the right way to determine our ability for this day and age anymore.

My proposal now is to replace the exams with, perhaps, a more intricate weekly evaluation. For example we could give the students slightly more assignments, big or small, for every concluded chapter instead of cramping it all for a one time evaluation.

That way students will be able to focus more on the exercises and will receive a more generous chance at improving their skills for a practical future later in their professional lives.

Kind regards,
Ludivine Vits
Student of Applied Linguistics

Proposition of an alternative examination method

Dear Mr. Housen,

I am writing to you I order to propose an alternative method of assessment.

An oral exam proved to be inconsistent in evaluating of the students’ skills for it is rather unreliable to be assessing one’s knowledge based on their performance that could be influenced by stress within one 5-15 minute session.

Moreover, a written exam is an outdated version of the final examination, which is a subject to debate since these exams are not enough to fully understand the potential and the specific course knowledge for students often times forget all studied material right after the exam period.

I would like to propose an alternative method of examination that could be based on a written thesis at home on a specific topic that could later be checked in terms of plagiarisms and assessed their knowledge of the course material.

Please let me what you think.

Cordially,
Aleksiia.

Hello, Mr. Alex Housen ,

My name is Vlad Gavrila, I am student at VUB, faculty of Multilingual and Literary Studies.

I am writing to express my concern about the outdated nature of our current exam system. As a student at this institution, I believe that we can do better in assessing students' academic performance.

Firstly, exams are heavily reliant on memorization, failing to nurture critical thinking and analytical skills.

Secondly, exams lead to undue stress and anxiety for students. To address these issues, I suggest implementing open-book exams, introducing alternative forms of assessment and reducing exam weightage in final grades.

These solutions can improve our current exam system while encouraging consistent learning.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Kind regards,
Vlad Gavrila.

Dear Mr. Housen,

I am a BA student of Applied Linguistics at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. I am emailing you because several students and I think that the exams are outdated. I would like to propose a suggestion to solve this problem. Many students are struggling to study all the material and only take an exam at the end of the year. Perhaps we can take multiple tests throughout the year?

Thank you in advance.

Yours faithfully,
X

Dear Mr. Housen

I apologize for disturbing you, but I had a question.

My name is Rania Abattoy and I am a first year student in applied linguistics English-Spanish.

Many students, including myself, think that the exams are outdated and should be abolished. This method is not efficient enough for a virtuous education. I would like to propose an improved alternative. I think it would be better to put more time and focus on the weaknesses of the students by exercising regularly.

I thank you in advance for your response.

Sincerely,
Abattoy Rania
