Sophie is an archive hosted by Brigham-Young University. It
"is an open-access, full-text-searchable source of literature written by German-speaking women from medieval times through the early 20th century." It ranges in genres (even including non-fiction) and even includes pictures/portraits of the writers with brief biographies. While the resources and theses sections are small it does evidence that research can be done on works that go beyond our "Canon".

This is a good resource for this course because it can be used to provide additional options for personal canons. Additionally, you may want to know if people other than Goethe or Schiller were writing during their "era" in order to widen your understanding of what was going on socially/politically during the time Goethe wrote Faust I or something like that. Women often write about different aspects of social life and by reading their works we can learn more about the time periods in which they write.

I came across this website a few years ago and I think it is a good general resource on German literature, and because it covers many authors and works, would also be a help to this class. It is very old-school in its design, but I find this endearing. It is organized by century and then by author. But there are many pages hyperlinked to each other, so once you drill down to an author's page, for example, then there are also pages giving information about selected works and why they are considered significant in German literature. You can also search to see immediately if a topic is covered. The website is made by Ernest Schonfield, a lecturer of German in Scotland, and he updates it quite often (see the page "Recent Site Activity"). In addition, different pages have been written by different contributors, who are mostly UK-based. So it is kind like a Wiki, in that one could theoretically contribute pages, but it is edited and organized by the site author.

As for the articles themselves, they vary in length, but are intended as an introduction or overview, not deep analyses of works. The website can't be said to be extremely comprehensive (for example, no Herta Mueller!), and one must of course consider who wrote each page and what their expertise is. Nonetheless, I think it offers value in its ease of use, and most especially, the selections for further reading and links to other web sources. (Sara Marsh)
