Mother’s Day is a special occasion dedicated to honoring and expressing gratitude towards mothers and mother figures worldwide. It’s a day that celebrates the contributions, sacrifices, and love of mothers in shaping the lives of their children and society. The date of Mother’s Day varies from country to country, which raises the question: When is Mother’s Day celebrated around the world? (2024)

Mother’s Day is predominantly observed on the second Sunday of May in many countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and most European nations. This tradition began in the United States in the early 20th century when Anna Jarvis campaigned to set aside a day to honor all mothers after the death of her own mother. By 1914, it had become an official holiday in the United States.

However, Mother’s Day dates differ globally due to historical, cultural, and religious reasons. For example, the United Kingdom celebrates Mother’s Day, known as Mothering Sunday, on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This tradition originally started as a religious event, with children giving flowers and gifts to their mothers after visiting the 'mother church'.

In other parts of the world, the date is linked to significant events or traditional festivals. For instance, in Thailand, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the birthday of Queen Sirikit on August 12, reflecting the respect and reverence for the queen mother of the country. Similarly, in Ethiopia, families gather to celebrate Mother’s Day during the autumn season as part of the festival of AmTrust, which is dedicated to mothers.

Conclusion

Although the dates might differ, the essence of Mother’s Day is universally the same—to honor and celebrate the monumental role that mothers play in our lives. Regardless of when it is celebrated, Mother’s Day offers an opportunity for expressing affection and gratitude towards mothers through various gestures such as gifts, cards, and quality time spent together. As cultures continue to recognize and adapt this celebration, the spirit of honoring motherhood remains a cherished tradition worldwide.
