Das liegt daran, dass die Torfschichten sehr quellfähig sind und somit wie Schwämme wirken. Untersuchungen haben gezeigt, dass ein intaktes Hochmoor bei Starkregen rund 90 Prozent des Niederschlagwassers aufsaugen und später dann nach und nach wieder abgeben kann. Ihre Saugfähigkeit ist laut Schätzungen 5 Mal stärker als die von Wiesen.
