He knew she had been lonely lately, and he wanted to cheer her up. He had invited her to lunch at the coffee shop, down the street from where they lived. Since they lived close to each other, they had walked to the shop together. They went to sit down at a corner table in the coffee shop. “Thank you, for inviting me to lunch, Jack,” Mrs. Sperbs said as he hung her coat and purse up on the hooks. “No problem! I thought it would be fun” Jack said, smiling. After they placed their order, Jack pulled out Mrs. Sperbs’ favorite card game. “I thought we could play a little of your favorite game while we wait for our lunch!” he said, setting up the game. Mrs. Sperbs smiled a huge smile. “Oh, Jack, you always make my days brighter!” Mrs. Sperbs and Jack played the card game until their lunch came. Then they enjoyed their lunch and a friendly conversation with each other. When lunch was done, the waiter brought the check and placed it on the table. Jack grabbed it and paid for it. “This is my treat for you!” he said to Mrs. Sperbs. Mrs. Sperbs thanked him, smiling.

Making an inference is simply "reading between the lines". It's filling in the blanks for the information not directly given to you. Sometimes you may even say it as drawing a conclusion. The skill of making inferences is important in real life situations whether through illustration, audio, video, live situation or text. 

Take the next 90 minutes to learn more about making inferences, especially through literary texts and practice to become better at the skill so that you have improved reading comprehension.  

Start by making inferences as you watch a video clip. This is your engine precheck & inspect. Follow up in the steam up section through exploring the topic and skill by means of explanation and examples. Finally, move out to practice to become better at the skill.
