Good news: Don Lehman from the Sitka Fine Arts Camp called this week...wanted to know it would be alright if a world famous cellist and a talented Pianist could come out in early February to do a concert for the community! I said yes of course!

In a nutshell, homework must be designed to improve parent school partnerships. That should be its soul purpose...not remediation, not finishing work not completed in class, not character building....ask your self, will this homework improve parent and school partnerships?
As you might expect, this will be something we will talk about next Friday. EXCEL math homework is a very good example of what is appropriate...a review of tasks already taught. Flash cards of math facts are also something that parents and kids can work on together that will have an academic benefit as well as a parent school partnership benefit. I am thinking we will all have something to say about this and we will need to wrap our brains about what this really means for each of us. :)

Dear Dan,

This past week in Mekoryuk we deliberately re-taught rules and procedures to our students after our week long "fall holiday". We had our last JH Cross -Country practice and students are looking forward to starting NYO next week. Plant Facilities sent out help for us to fix our boilers, Nancy Nish came out to help students with their scheduling and Jim Biela came out to do some needed social work. On the home front, We had a late season rush of silver salmon this week and everyone is filling their freezers with fish (and berries).. Finally, Mekoryuk Elder Nancy Edwards passed on this week and her funeral and feast will be held Sunday.

regarding your homework scenario...it wouldn't over ride the policy but the fact that you are working hand in hand with the parent would improve parent school relationships...so you could do that.
