When the Board came to her house because of her unresponsive behavior, they heard her talking about Colonel Sartoris who had been dead for 10 years. This proves that Emily was very antisocial, and assumed that because of her father she had a higher place than everyone in society. Like paying taxes. She had not been connected or even informed of what was going on around her, and ultimately leaves her to die alone.
