         <description><![CDATA[<div>1895 26th May - Nicholas crowned as the Tsar.<br>1903 - Rasputin arrives in Petersburg.<br>1904 8th February - Russo-Japanese War.<br>1904 - Workers 20% worse off than before.<br>1904 - Port Arthur falls to the Japanese.<br>1905 - 13,000 workers on strike in Putilov.<br>1905 January - Planning of Bloody Sunday by Father Gapon and the event of Bloody Sunday.<br>1905 21st January - 110,000 workers in Petersburg on strike.<br>1905 22nd January - 200 killed and more than 500 injured on Bloody Sunday.<br>1905 23rd January - Tsar blamed although he was not present.<br>1905 5th September - End of Russo Japanese war through Treaty of Portsmouth.<br>1905 30th October - October Manifesto.<br>1905 November - Trotsky rejects October Manifesto.<br>1905 8th November - Lenin returns to Russia.<br>1906 May - First elected Duma. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1907 16th June - Second Duma shut down.<br>1911 18th December - Stolypin assassinated.<br>1914 February - Triple Entendre, Nicholas allied Russia with Britain and France.<br>1914 28th June - Heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Franz Ferdinand assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, member of the Black Hand a Serbian Nationalist group, in Sarajevo.<br>1914 1st August - Germany declared war on Russia</div><div>1914 August - Russian army badly equipped for war. Most were conscripted peasants inadequately clothed, three soldiers had to share two guns.<br>1914 6th August - Austria-Hungary declared war on Russia.</div><div>1914 30th August - Russia lost Battle of Tannenberg. 140,000 Russians die in 3 day battle.<br>1915 6th September -</div><div>Tsar Nicholas takes personal charge of the army and dismisses the Duma but does not have sufficient military experience to turn the war to Russia’s favour thus making him appear wholly responsible.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1916 November - Food prices now four times higher than in 1914, Workers begin to strike for higher pay.<br>1916 17th December - Rasputin assassinated.<br>1917 January - Army announces intentions to support the Duma if the Tsar is undermined.<br>1917 7th March - Nicholas decided he needed to return to Petrograd but train diverted by railway workers.<br>1917 9th March - 200,000 protestors on the streets of Petrograd calling for the Tsar to be replaced.</div><div>1917 10th March -</div><div>Petrograd at a standstill, more than 250,000 people were on strike.<br>1917 12th March -</div><div>Members of the Duma decide to form a Provisional Committee.<br>1917 15th March -</div><div>Nicholas II reluctantly abdicates as Tsar. Names younger brother Mikhail as the new Tsar a position he refused. The Royal family placed under house arrest.</div><div>1917 16th March -</div><div>First Provisional government formed, led by Prince Lvov, a member of the Kadet party.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1917 3rd April -</div><div>Lenin returns to Russia.</div><div>1917 August -</div><div>The Romanov family moved to Tobolsk in Western Siberia.</div><div>1918 3rd March - The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk ended Russian involvement in World War One. </div><div>1918 Spring -</div><div>The Romanov family were moved to Ekaterinburg in the Urals.</div><div>1918 17th July -</div><div>Nicholas and the Romanov family were told to go to the cellar where they believed they were to be photographed.          <description><![CDATA[<div>1902 Summer - In London, Lenin meets Leon Trotsky.<br>1903 11th August - Lenin became leader of the Bolshevik Faction at the Social Democratic Labour Party Conference in London.<br>1905 8th November - Lenin returns to St Petersburg.<br>1917 April - Stalin came third in Bolshevik elections to the Bolshevik Central Committee after Lenin and Zinoviev.<br>1917 3rd April - Lenin returns to St Petersburg, Russia, manages to negotiate safe passage through Germany in a sealed train. Writes his April Theses<br>1917 7th April - Lenin’s April Theses published in the Communist newspaper ‘Pravda’.<br>1917 (2nd July)</div><div>Leon Trotsky joined the Bolsheviks.</div><div>1917 (3rd – 4th July)</div><div>July Days<br>Stalin helped to organise a series of demonstrations against the government. Workers were joined on the streets by soldiers and the Kronstadt sailors calling for power to the Soviets.</div><div>1917 (4th July)</div><div>Prince Lvov, head of the Provisional government resigned.</div><div>1917 (around 6th July)</div><div>Lenin returned to Petrograd to try to diffuse the situation.</div>]]></description>
