The Effects of Fear in The Tell-Tale Heart

The Tell-Tale Heart demonstrates the fact that fear has a way of consuming a person, making them do unspeakable things. It portrays feelings of anxiety that come about as a result of fear taking over. The narrator correlated a sense of dread with the old man's "Evil Eye." He compared it to a vulture and how it tears apart the carcasses of dead animals. The narrator was deeply afraid of the old man's eye, which drove him to kill the old man to shut his eye forever. After he killed the old man, the police were over at the house to conduct their investigation. The narrator was eager to gloat, as he just murdered the old man and he hid the body so well. When the police were in the house, the narrator started to feel flustered and nervous. His anxiety eventually caused him to confess his crime of killing the old man.

The story "The Tell-Tale Heart" demonstrates the heightened emotions we may feel during stressful situations- which in turn may influence our perception of reality, or the decisions we make. I don't believe fear necessarily drove the narrator to kill the old man- however, I do believe fear (along with other dramatized emotions, like rage) made it POSSIBLE for the narrator to commit the act. The narrator had justification for killing once they "feared" the old man's vulture eye. Fear, however, DID cause the narrator to confess to the crime.

In the Tell-Tale Heart, the effects of fear are displayed throughout the story in many ways. The effect of fear for the old man was extreme adrenaline and freezing up in fear. The narrator had no fear, other than going insane from the sounds of the heart beat. The narrator also had a great fae She responded to this by killing the old man. Her insanity drove her past reality to kill him. This was the effect of her fear

The story "Tell Tale Heart" is demonstrating that fear can cause someone to make irrational decisions. It can lead someone to act on their defense mechanisms even if they are not rational.

In the Tell-Tell Heart, the narrator continuously denies his insanity throughout the story. His fear and anxiety towards the old man and his eye are what lead him to insanity, and eventually he kills the old man. Through the telling of events, the story demonstrates how fear can lead you to do dangerous things that you wouldn't have done otherwise.
