In King Lear, Shakespeare portrays that Lear's pride and lack of insight into Cordelia's true feeling causes him to outcast her. King Lear is so enwrapped in his own self-dignity that he cannot provide a nurturing parental figure to his daughters. Lear finds satisfaction in watching them compete for each other in professing their love for him. Cordelia behaves like a loyal daughter to Lear and honestly tells him that “[she] cannot heave [her] heart into [her] mouth”(1.1.90-91). Lear takes her response as an insult because of his inability to put himself into his daughter's shoes. Throughout the novel, Lear proves himself a strong father and king who demands respect. He never once thinks to consider his daughters' emotions when he makes decisions. His pride keeps him from accepting his daughter and allows him to let his entire family turn on her.
Like Cordelia, Edmund is outcasted as well. Because he is a bastard son, he will never inherit any of his father's fortunes. He has lived his entire life as the lesser son. Society looks down upon illegitimate children and ADD QUOTE. Both Cordelia and Edmund clearly feel undervalued and worthless in society. It isn't until Gloucester is blinded that he truly sees his favoritism among his sons.

Thomas Hardy gives his readers insight into Tess Durbeyfield's traumatic experiences and how those who mistreat her are those who are ignorant of her trauma. Throughout Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Tess experiences trauma from her alcoholic family system and toxic relationships. Tess's family proves to be inconsiderate toward her feelings when they force her to go to the d'Urberville home in hope of obtaining new fortune: ADD QUOTE.... There, Tess discovers a boy named Alec who expresses interest in her. After realizing that she does not love Alec, Tess decides to stay with him for her family’s sake. Tess is treated poorly by her abuser Alec who constantly calls her "mighty sensitive" for her emotions. Tess is n
Tess is left feeling "utterly worthless" (129).

In her short stories, Virginia Woolf portrays how people can be completely unaware of other's insecurities and how our actions can be unknowingly detrimental to her self-esteem. In the New Dress, the main character Mabel recalls her feelings of exclusion at a party. Mabel says that her dress is "not right" but never specifies what the problem is. This leads the reader to believe that ADD. At the party, the narrator feels judged and feels inferior" ADD QUOTE. She feels a need to assimilate to the crowd and follow every trend of the upper class. She is hyperaware and overly concerned about others' perceptions of her. She imagines that all the guest are thinking, "What's Mabel wearing?" She longs to be like the people she encounters who are dressed "precisely like everybody else"; her biggest fear is being different from the majority, or an outcast. However, no one at the party makes any attempt to find out why she reacts the way she does. The guests simply give her fake reassurance and label her as "overreacting." Mabel reveals that she has felt "inferior to other people..ever since she was a child"
