I will be discussing my 3 favourite short stop motion music videos, Son Lux - Change is Everything, Ok Go - Last Leaf and Shugo Tokumaro - Katachi.

Starting with Change is Everything, I had no idea about how creative and experimental stop motion could be until I saw this genius music video. The string and pins move smoothly across the board to create faces, mouths, shapes, landscapes and other various things in surreal manor. The time it took, like other stop motion, must have been ages as the animator would have had to measure the distances of the pins for each frame of every shape and made sure the proportions were correct for each frame for the faces and especially getting the perspective on the plane. Personally I found it incredibly satisfying to watch especially seeing the trail of holes that each pin left and how the whole thing was so elegant.

I thought I had already seen the most experimental mediums, String and Jelly beans, but oh boy was I wrong. Last leaf took it to a whole new level by having a whole story telling music video on toast. Each frame was a different piece of toast with engravings burnt into it to make an image, I'm assuming it was done by a laser cutter such as Katachi or if it was done with a magic toaster. The patterns on the toast is perfectly lined up after each frame so while the size and shape of the toast is rapidly changing, the stop motion element is smooooth especially when the stop motion slides from one toast to the other perfectly. Again, very satisfying to look at and almost hypnotising.

Lastly we have Katachi, lots of different colourful card has been cut into many different shapes, hand, people and other visually appealing patterns, whats unique about this stop motion compared to the others is how it is reacting to each note/sound that is in the song, this is represented though shapes and clapping hands. As the cutouts are so perfect, my guess is every single shape has been made in an online program and then laser cut to get the perfect shape. What I love about this one is that it all stacks up so you can see the progression of the stop motion as is trails back to the start. Very pleasing to look at and is technically 3D compared to the others as it has much more depth.

This mostly applies to a 3D animation (but can also definetly be be used on a flat 2D surface), such as 3D digital models or posable figures and so on. I will try my best in explaining how camera angles and positions can give a stop motion animation more depth, in a sense. Firstly I will list the basic and useful shot types:

-Close up, usualy just on one character and inculdes the face and shoulders, this is good for emphasizing the emotion of a character (if the character has a face and shoulders). A close up can be used to zoom in from a medium/long shot to make a character look shocked! This can be used in 2D animation.
-Medium shot, just can show more of of a character, includes entire torso and sometimes multiple characters, used to show upper body actions of a figure such as waving or slapping eg.
-Long shot, shows and entire characters body and/or multiple characters and lots of background. You will mostly use these in 2D and 3D animation as it gives you a nice wide view of everything going on and gives alot of room to work with.
-There is also an extreme close up when you ram the camera in a characters face to only show a single facial feature like the mouth or eye.

These are a few more advanced shot types that are used to change the mood of a scene or effect a characters stance eg.

-Low angle shot, this shot can be very useful for making a character have dominance, you can have he camera looking up at a character from the ground to make it loom over the viewer gives a sense of power to the character.
-High angle shot, the opposide of low angle, and can be used to make a charcater look weak and defencelss by habing the camera loom over them or high above like a bird of prey.
-Over the shoulder, gives the viewer a almost first person perspective without breaking the 4th wall boundaries, this is used to put us in the sitation of that character so if it is either pretitor or pray, the camera helps define that element.

Ok so now for a tutorial, this obviously is not the hardest thing in the world but I find it useful and I hope you do to! On the right you can see a dramatic tale shown in 3 images, very emotional I know. All you need to do is try and recreate the 3 shots! Use anything for it, plushies, food, ants, its just about the angles.
Do one photo for each, low angle, over the shoulder and High angle, just so you get a feel of how they work!

"In this post I will be discussing how to animate a television screen with minimal props.
Firstly, you will need to make/get yourself a television box. (I made mine out if card - I drew a net and folded it, sticking it with tape).

Once you have your television box you will need to create some 2D boxes that fit to the size of your television. (I made mine 4cm by 7cm, as mine was a small scale set).

On each of these cards you want to draw on key moments, for example, I was showing a news program and created 9 pictures, each showing a key moment. For example, one showed a man being jailed and another a breaking news sign.
Each one also had a time at the bottom to show the difference between each scene. (The time is not necessary but does help).

Once each picture has been drawn then you will need to either laminate or cover your cards in scelotape. Doing this makes it easier to remove the cards from the television box.
I used double sided tape to stick them on, but you can use what you prefer."

So, using plasticine in hot temperatues was a challange in itself as everything was gooping with everything however I was able to model the plasticine how I invisioned it, besides the fact I had no tripod and the camera angles I wanted I could only shoot form hand made it very wobbly which was a massive floor to the stop motion. The reason I chose plasticine was of how much movement you could get out of it as well as it being 3D I could mess around with how the characters moved, Such as the Blue Monster draggs itself along the ground with its face and tail sloshing about, also with the carrot worm thing I could also make it move in the motion a cartoon worm would move.

To make the stop motion I used a puzzle board for a large flat surface that would be easy to create a simple set on and move around characters, I tried to use my film studies knowlage to create diffrent shot types in hope to make the stop motion less static, such as having the camera follow along side the Blue monster in the approach to the Carrot worms home and when carrot worm approaches the camera. Used a desk lamp for warm lighting and had a set of facial expressions cut out for carrot worm. After the prep I positioned the models where I wanted and simply took pictures frame by frame.

When I was initaly creating the story board the "story" was very diffrent to what It turned out to be. Originaly It would have been a much more simple story of when Carrot worm thing gets chased out his house by blue monster and then seeks asylum elsewhere, but after getting feedback from my younger brother, I quote, "Blow him up" so I scratched the origional ending and made it more stupid and silly, more people liked that idea so I stuck to it however I had not digitaly created the new ending of the storyboard.

Overall, I felt like the quality was shoddy due to the camera shaking but I was fairly pleased with the movement and expressions of the characters, non the less Im still pleases that freinds and family liked it.
