Khmer New Year, or Chol Chnam Thmey, is a vibrant and festive celebration in Cambodia that marks the end of the harvesting season. Lasting for three days in mid-April, Khmer New Year is a time for family reunions, temple visits, and traditional games like tug-of-war and bas Angkunh. People traditionally clean their homes and make offerings to Buddha before donning new clothes to welcome the new year. One of the most anticipated aspects of Khmer New Year is the construction of sand mounds or 'prasat' at pagodas, symbolizing Mount Meru from Hindu mythology. The holiday is steeped in ancient traditions and customs that reflect Cambodian culture and values, making it a joyous occasion filled with food, music, dancing, and community spirit.
