In 1962 Vreeland left Harper’s Bazaar and joined Vogue where she became editor in chief in 1963. Vogue reflected her own taste for the novel, the bizarre, and the outrageous. She even featured the youthful and eccentric to reflect the age of youth in photography and designs using culture, and rock music to over throw traditional standards. She often followed her own idiosyncratic style, evident in such statements as “Pink is the navy blue of India.” She created the notion of the “Beautiful People,” a subclass of youthful, wealthy, and footloose members of the less-exclusive international set who were supposed to set the tone of fashion, art, and society.

Diana’s work granted women the freedom of breaking social norms. Before Vreeland came into the picture, women were subjected to wearing plain outfits, there was nothing fashionable about them. Women were constantly wearing the same look (poised, society women with drapes covering their bodies). Because of Vreeland’s vivid imagination, she changed the way fashion, design and photography were used by creating dynamic, eccentric and fun personalities for each subject. Which in ways changed the way women saw themselves (with her influence women now wear colorful, reading outfits with flare).

My favorite thing I learned about Diana was seeing her covers for magazines. Getting to understand her vision through fashion, photography and design is one of the coolest things. I believe she is one of the people who paved the way how the world sees and uses fashion and design now. She is truly an inspiration to so many people and even today she is still very well known even after her passing.

1940s vogue magazine to 1959 Vreeland’s Bazzar magazine cover.

Each cover has its own unique qualities, each cover uses fashion to create works that go with the times. In the Vogue-cover the stereotypical cover includes a woman covered in a summer gown (fashionably covered). In the Bazzar cover, it has colored gloves with an eye showing through, it captures the attention because it’s something out of the ordinary. Both are related by how they convey the message wether it’s summer or having eyes on Paris and America-it shows the relationships between those specific times.
