One of my interests include modern filipino music from artists like as SB19 and BINI blend and indie favorites Lola Amour and Zild, complemented by hip-hop giants like Flow G. Ben&Ben is one of the artists that's changing the face of OPM through traditional representation of sounds fused with modern influences, heightened through social media and streaming services, taking in the rich diversity, evolved identity of the Filipino music.

While they might sometimes be dismissed, they hold a significant place in Filipino pop culture and offer a window into contemporary Filipino life and values. Have you seen Un/happy for you? quite the bittersweet ending, but it's a personal favorite.

"Pit Senyor!"

For my padlet, I’d like to feature the lively and religious Sinulog Festival which is held once a year, on every third Sunday of January. It celebrates the Santo Niño in a grand manner through dance, music, and beautiful costumes. The iconic "Pit Señor!" chant as well as the dance Sinulog, a synchronized two-steps forward, one step back, which represents the current of the Pahina (river). It's an energetic fusion of native culture and Catholicism that draws millions of domestic and foreign visitors. Though, to have only experience it only once first-hand in Cebu, I’ll forever be in awe of when I first saw grand parade, the elaborate costumes, and the passionate devotion of the participants that capture the very essence of this distinctly Filipino cultural phenomenon.

The Carnival Theory in Sinulog Festival

The Carnival theory, popularized by Mikhail Bakhtin, discusses how “carnivals” are spaces where the lines between social hierarchies blur and societal norms come to a halt. The Sinulog festival highlights this theory as all—rich, poor, young or old—come together, united in their devotion and celebration. For a brief period of time, the structured order of society is replaced by the festivity of rhythmic dancing and collective chanting. A shared experience that sets aside the everyday social boundaries. This allows a union of faith and a sense of community that reinforces social bonds.

The festival's flexibility guarantees its ongoing relevance in modern society. Sinulog incorporates contemporarymusic and dance, adapting to changing cultural preferences while maintaining its essential traditions. The extensive media coverage, including social media, increases its international exposure and cultural impact. This visibility draws tourists, stimulating the local economy and solidifying Cebu's cultural identity. The festival is, thus, not a stagnanttradition but a living cultural event that evolves and transforms. Sinulog constantly forms and reformulates the cultural environment through its dynamicfusion of tradition and contemporary society.
