We learned a lot of stretching exercises and played games to improve our fitness. We read a picture book and learned a lot about him and his art. His sister calls him "The boy who just kept drawing". His figures are very special, they have no face and are very abstract. He was also a very special person. He didn't care about making a lot of money, he wanted his art to be accessible to everyone. He also included children in his work.

We also practiced addition and subtraction with two-digit numbers. We also practiced multiplication and started division. In the meantime, we can even read the time. Afterwards, some of us wanted to make a dance inspired by the ocean, so we worked in small groups to make tableaux, with low, middle and high shapes. Then we added movements to our tableaux to make a dance, and lastly we performed for one another. 

Now, we're exploring negative space (and positive space). We use our shapes to make obstacle courses for one another. They also worked very hard memorizing the words and melodies for “Good Day Sunshine” which I hope everyone enjoyed in the Spring Celebration! Recently we’ve started learning more about instrument families through listening to Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” as well as explored playing music from “the Lion King” on percussion instruments called Boomwhackers! We have discussed that poems can have repetition, can be an emotional outlet and as poets, we can be as funky with our writing as we want to be. This unit is going to prepare them for third grade because we are focusing on the characters across a series and how they handle problems. Our main goal during this unit is to understand character traits and use evidence from the text to support our ideas. We are also working very hard to annotate important ideas within the text as well. The students are reading Junie B. We learned the difference between the major homophones they encounter in their reading and writing such as "there", "their" "they're" and "to", "two" and "too". In keeping with our season, we discussed which flowers bloom in the spring. What do they look like? How do they smell? Can I eat them, too? To go along with that, we did a reading walk. The solution word was spring. Many strategies helped us with this. We got better and better in our spelling tests. We also practiced presenting and introducing each other to a fairy tale we had read. We discussed how we could understand words we didn't know in a text while reading and how we could look up words in the word list. We often went to the library at school to borrow books. We can't wait to get more involved with books in the coming weeks.
