Rigid STEM mindsets make it hard to do this work. We put boundaries on what is allowable on STEM. It is nice to be in a group where we can unlearn some of those boundaries together.

Interdisciplinary within Our Discipline

I'm really excited to work with my incredibly diverse lesson study group. Even though we are in the same discipline, our classes and our sub-foci are so different! I think it will be a challenge to find a topic that we can work on together, but I am excited for this challenge and look forward to meeting with my lesson study group again

Choosing a focus group is a little tricky. It isn't obvious what the right answer is. Do we target a bigger group (e.g., Latinx students) or a smaller group (e.g. first-generation Latinx women).

What are the best ways to tell if our project was useful in rehumanizing STEM? In other words, what will we use as a metric of success? I know our goal is not to create a perfect STEM lesson, but to instead learn something about teaching, but it seems like it would be helpful to have a way to tell if our lesson is way off track even if we think we are doing a good job.

Having participated in the previous TIPS workshops, filling out the mapping our practice worksheet was a nice way to see how I've made progress in rehuminizing my courses in some ways, but it also showed clearly where I can still do more work!

The table is a very nice way to see clearly where progress can be made.

Workshops like these are always very energizing for me. I get lots of ideas for new things that I want to implement. However, I also need to remind myself that doing too much can be counter-productive and choosing one or two changes to make at a time is generally wiser.

I learned that rehumanizing STEM is about more than just teaching technical content. It’s about centering people, histories, cultures, and emotions in the learning process.
I also learned that the RM dimensions offer counter-narratives to traditional ways of teaching STEM and can help me design lessons that connect more meaningfully with my students.
