Its what I imagine the parking lot scene was like or how the Spinners (group of hallway dancers at Grateful Dead shows) were like. Just people letting the music take them away and enjoying the moment. It's not clear whether anyone in this video is necessarily having a spiritual experience, but their actions greatly mirror what was described by people who have had such experiences. Looking at the hippie culture that surround the Grateful Dead, a lot of people thought of their concerts as something otherworldly. Its hard to say whether all these experiences were genuine because you can't know whats going on in someone else's mind, but it seems that enough people did believe that they had these sorts of experiences and so its hard to deny that there's something real about them. Even if some of it was in large part due to drugs, they still had experiences that they felt were spiritual. Some participants described the experiences as a "loss of self and expansion of consciousness" (Sylvan 95). Attending these concerts allowed them to see things in a new light and fill rejuvenated. The first one was at the House of Blues and was for Flyleaf and Drowning Pool. It was quite enjoyable but by the end of it, I was very tired and was about to fall asleep. The next was Vans Warped Tour which was fun at the time but was extremely hot and crowded. The last was at the Bomb Factory and was for a band I don't remember. I didn't really want to be there so I didn't stay long. I honestly can't say that I've had anything close to a religious experience at any of these concerts. However, I really do enjoy music and there are so many tours going on right now that I would love to attend. It's really just about having the time and means to do so, but I guess that what the individuals who attended concerts like the Grateful Dead did. Some of them were homeless, having to beg for tickets, just finding anyway they could to see their favorite band. Her hands are up and eyes are closed as she sways. This seems to be a universal language for someone who has given themselves to the music, letting it guide them. Though I don't often do it in public, sometimes when listening to music that I really enjoy, I will take a similar pose, moving with the music. Dancing like this can make one feel as though all their worries have been washed away. I couldn't help but see the similarities between this image and the image of the concert goers to the right. I admittedly have not had much experience with either of these types of situations in person but both groups look as though they are trying to reach out and connect with something, something not physical. Each of them move to their own beat similar to the drum circle video to the right. Overall, I think a big thing that connects these aspects of spirituality and concert events is the dancing. Dancing is an amazing form of expression that allows you to sort of free you mind and open yourself up. For some, like these churchgoers, it might be opening up to God and for others it could just be opening up to an idea or feeling.
