Buson, also known as Yosa Buson, was a Japanese painter and poet who was best known for his haiku poems. He was born in Kema, Settsu province, Japan, in 1716 and died in Kyto on January 17, 1784.Buson was born into a wealthy family but left it behind to pursue a career in the arts. 

He traveled widely across northeastern Japan, studying haiku under a number of masters, including Hayano Hajin, whom he eulogized in Hokuju Rsen wo itonamu (1745; “Homage to Hokuju Rsen”). He settled in Kyto as a practicing painter in 1751 and remained there for the rest of his life. He did, however, spend three years (1754–57) in Yosa, Tango province, a beautiful city. He worked hard to develop his poetry and painting techniques while he was there.

He changed his surname from Taniguchi to Yosa during this period. After 1772, Buson's reputation as a poet skyrocketed. He advocated for the revival of his great forefather Matsuo Bash's legacy, but he never achieved Bash's degree of humanistic understanding. Buson's poetry is ornate and sensuous, rich in visual detail, perhaps reflecting his interest in art. “Use colloquial language to transcend colloquialism,” he advised, adding that “one must speak poetry” in haiku.

This required not only an acute ear and a keen eye, but also familiarity with Chinese and Japanese classics, according to Buson. Buson's interest in Chinese poetry is particularly evident in three long irregular-form poems. His experimental poems are dubbed "Chinese poems in Japanese," and two of them have Chinese passages.

The poet is trying to capture the essence of life and how beautiful a spring night is. Buson lights the candles and is probably writing this poem under the bright moon. Masaoka Shiki (born October 14, 1867, Matsuyama, Japan—died September 19, 1902, Tokyo) was a poet, essayist, and critic who revived traditional Japanese literary forms such as haiku and tanka. Masaoka was born into a family of samurai (warriors). In 1883, he moved to Tokyo to study and started writing poetry in 1885. 

He entered a publishing company after studying at Tokyo Imperial University from 1890 to 1892. During his brief service as a reporter with the Japanese army during the Sino-Japanese War, the tuberculosis he had acquired in 1889 worsened, and he was almost always an invalid from then on. Despite this, he remained an influential figure in the literary world, and his thoughts on poetry and aesthetics, as well as his own poems, were published on a regular basis.

He believed that a poet should portray things as they are, and that he should compose in everyday language. Masaoka rekindled interest in the 8th-century poetry anthology Man’yō-shū ("Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves") and the haiku poet Buson through his articles. Masaoka also wrote about his disease, both in poems and essays like “Byōshō rokushaku” (1902; “The Six-foot Sickbed”), but his work is strikingly distant and devoid of self-pity.
