Song 1- Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield

“I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines
We've been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can't live that way

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find”

This song is apart of transcendentalism because it shows non-conformity to the vision of having to be perfect all the time. In the lyrics it is saying that she is breaking the tradition of being perfect by going out of the lines people have drawn for themselves and for those around them. It also says that you should be free to let go of what is holding you back and to be yourself, be “unwritten”

The singer is telling us that they wish there were things that they could create that no one else had and that there would be creativity and individualism in this world so we wouldn't be so “stressed out”. They are also talking about when they were little and could have an imagination and not have so many rules to follow and could pretty much do what they wanted.

It says that you should hold on to that feeling that causes you to do whatever you want and to never stop believing in what you believe in. This song shows that you are standing up for yourself and thinking for yourself

Simplicity is a part of transcendentalism because to be able to look around you and know what is going on you must have some simplicity and not all the crazy and wild stuff like we have today. In this image this man and this tree are showing simplicity because it is just them and that is all they need to stay peaceful and intune with the world. Since the man is walking towards the tree he is “probably” walking away from many other things and just wants to be aloneness and be simple.

This article on simplicity talks about all the new movements about keeping homes decluttered and cleaning out clothes and just how it has evolved from what it was in the past. The more one thinks about this though the more you think and realize if we didn’t have all this stuff we wouldn’t need to get rid of it. Also it proves what Thoreau was doing when he lived in that cabin in the woods to live a simple life with only a few things.

This quote from Thoreau is telling us that we must not be looking at ourselves like we know what we are but become lost to begin to understand who we are. He doesn’t say how we must become lost because that part we can do pretty easily but the harder part is knowing what to recognize as understanding of ourselves. This quote is about part of transcendentalism because it more about knowing that it is on you to understand who you are and to have your own thoughts about it.

Though it is east to think that we are all awake, you have to assume that Thoreau must mean awake in a different sense, like one must be awake in their thoughts and mind and being able to understand what that means. As soon as we understand that we are awake and can understand those thoughts can we be alive and truly live.

Fuller is talking about how the thunderclap and the rivers flowing from nature helped her more understand the world and her belief a little in God, but she said that it doesn’t truly mean she believed in him. Nature and God can be seen as related in many aspects and this was tellling us a few and helping us understand how they relate.

Conformity is a big issue and we need more people to be themselves but once we start doing that it will be conformity still because everyone will conform to being their own individual. Being accepted and loved is a huge part of who we are as humans and that is what Thoreau and Emerson were straying away from and telling us to be ourselves.
