In my group was Matthew, Sofia, and Claire. Matthew played the bully and also helped to edit, Claire filmed and helped edit as well. Sofia was the protagonist and I, Lilyana was the one getting bullied. This short film was also filmed only within the courtyard of my school, Gulf Coast High School. Overall for our first film it wasn’t too bad, but as usual when doing something for the first time, their will always be ways to improve for next time.

Their were a few issues I would correct about this film. First would be to talk louder, since the audio quality wasn’t great and sometimes it was hard to make out what an actor was saying. Second would be to act better, for example like don’t laugh or cover your face. Third would be to get different perspectives and angles, for example when Sofia was talking on the bench, when she started to think to herself, we should’ve thought to zoom in on her. Another example would be when Matthew comes up to me and Sofia the last two times, we should’ve decided to get his face and a different point of view for the shots. Not only that, but we also had to add 10 different shots/movement types that we learned previous to filming. My group got assigned The stalker, where in the original film a girl was being stalked, and when he tried to kidnap her he got jumped by her friend group. In the updated film, we decided to have a girl getting stalked, but instead of the stalker getting jumped he drugged the girl, and we are left with a cliff-hanger where we don't know if the girl getting stalked survived, and we also don't know if the stalker got away with what he did. Also in this film we had the same actors/editors as before, but we had two new people. I was the person being stalked, Matthew was the stalker, Sofia was an extra, along with Isabella, Claire and Logan filmed, and Matthew also edited this film. The ten shots we included were: Close ups, panning, over the shoulder, high angle shot, low angle shot, POV shot, Three person shot, Two person shot, depth, and many more. Also the roles played in this film were similar to the roles played in the previous film we had made.

Overall I feel like it came out pretty good, obviously there are parts we could improve, but this is only our second film so I think its okay. One thing that went well was making audience feel emotions, for example with the way the film starts, then transitioning to the shot with the name of the film, with big red words and scary music, it successfully caused the audience to feel curious and a little scared. Another thing that went well was the cliffhanger, which was at the end of the film after the stalker had drugged the girl, it ended with a shot of her eyes opening fast with a big gasp, causing the audience to ask what happened next, which is exactly what we wanted. One thing that went wrong was when the talker drugged the girl, there was people in the shot and it made it look like it was staged because they didn't do anything they just stood there and let it happen, so next time if I was filming that same shot id make sure to check my surroundings better. In total we were trying to achieve a clear story plot, suspense, fear, and curiosity, and I would say we did a pretty good job at making that happen with the little resources we had. ]]> 2022-09-22 12:37:57 UTC https://padlet.com/LilyanaMelia9969/9969aicemediablog/wish/2308671672 GENRE AND REPRESENTATION REFLECTION LilyanaMelia9969 https://padlet.com/LilyanaMelia9969/9969aicemediablog/wish/2367463884     For this next presentation we had to do for Aice Media we were required to know all the different genre types like: Western, Shakespeare, Biographies, Sports Clips, Sci-fi, Young Adult, Musicals, Romance, Comedy, Dramas, Historical, War, Superhero, Documentaries, Horror, Thriller, Crime, Adventure, Animation, and Family. Not only did we have to know the genres, but we also had to know the conventions, codes, and emotions expected to feel for that genre. An example of a convention in a superhero movie, would be like how the characters normally start off nerdy and regular like everyone, but then they acquire this great power and learn how to live with it. A example of a code is like in a horror movie, the lighting is more low key, to create more darkness and make the movie more suspenseful. Also an example of a audience expectation is like how people watch romance movies expecting to feel how the characters feel throughout their love story. We also watched movie clips from three different time periods to show how movies developed, or stayed similar.  Also some films are hybrid films, which are a mix of two or more genres, like rom-coms, a mix of romance and comedy.
    In the first film me and my group made I feel like the genre was Young Adult. This is because the story was in a school setting, and incorporated a young group of friends that allowed for character growth. We may have broke some rules in the first film by having a lack of characters and the bully didn't really fully achieve that character development I feel. In the second film the genre was more a mix of thriller and horror. This is because we used the right angles, incorporating anticipation, Which was slow and steady but fast at the same time, used tracking shots, and the setting was also in a school. I feel like it may have been missing dark lighting, silhouettes, and sound effects.
Personally my favorite genres are romance and horror, but I'm going to have to pick romance for this. A potential movie idea for romance could be a girl and a boy grow up together, there entire life being best friends, and they have both always secretly had feelings for each other, and when the girl tired to tell the boy she liked him it was already too late he had a girlfriend/love interest now, so she went and found this one boy she loved(but she'll never be able to love as much as her best friend). The boy and his girlfriend break up because this whole time she was secretly cheating on him, so now he thinks he can finally have a fair chance with his girl best friend, but its too late because he finds out his girl best friend, who he is also secretly in love with is engaged to this new guy now. And since they are best friends she invited him to the wedding, and right before they could say I do he objects to it and admits everything, and he runs away into another room, the bestfriend follows and everyone is shocked, it ends with them ending up together and having a children and living in there dream home. To fully understand editing, we studied film, editing concepts, and created documents, featuring 20+ kinds of editing techniques. We also watched a documentary on film editing (“The Cutting Edge”) and a video on use of color. We then studied sound basics and watched a documentary on cinema sound (“Making Waves”). so we could understand screen writing. We read the screenplay for “The Incredibles”, and learned how to format, screen plays using special software, and wrote a two minute horror film opening about someone having a nightmare as the basis for your midterm, film project.

 The requirements of the midterm film projects: 1 to 2 minutes; horror, horror, hybrid; an “opening” rather than a finished filling product; minimal dialogue (mostly music, sound effects/ambience); no wall-to-wall music; no long takes; start in black with company ident and/or logo and title and optional credit before straight, cut or dissolve to first image; minimum of three crosscuts between actor and nightmare; edited/shop/uploaded by student; accompanying blog post. The film must also include one close up; one touch angle; one high or low angle; one pan or till or track/push or spin around; one zoom or Dolly zoom; one subliminal, cut, or multi, take or smash cut; one match cut; one J cut or L cut; one use of slow or fast motion; one intentional use of color for story/emotion; one instance of intentional use of costume/hair/make up; one instance of visual complexity in setting choice (color, texture, depth, lines, shapes, etc.); three sound effects; one piece of incidental music, or one sound motif repeated three times; extra credit to include: quick cuts; montage; wide establishing shot; split screen; POV shot; reflection shot; intentional break of the fourth wall; intentional break of the rule of thirds; rack focus or Pull focus; intentional use of hand held camera work; ; use of color filters to create a dream like quality; fisheye lens or fish eye effect; company logo with high-quality graphic.

 I followed the horror, conventions/code/audience, expectations, and engagement by using a younger girl as the actor, low-key leading by using red, LED lights, a jump scare at the end of the movie, a POV shot in the dream, and for color choosing red. I broke the horror, conventions/codes/audience expectations, and engagement by not making it super serious all the time. I should have added more unusual angles at the end of the film, I shot a scene with the flash I wish I found a way around that, also, when the Burger King man came up to the little lady, I wish there was a larger feeling of fear involved. The idea of my film is “ don’t take candy from strangers,” although this time, it was a burger, and I just use the components of making a movie to portray the facts behind that. I tried to show that you don’t trust strangers, and especially don’t take food from them.

 Their was a few things I felt proud of in my movie clip, the first thing being as somebody who has never edited anything before, I feel as if I did a good job for my first time. For example, the way I used sound effects, transitions, and sped up clips. Another thing I am proud of would be my creativity, for having limited resources, I feel as if I came up with the best idea that I could. Their are a couple of less successful ideas in my movie as well, first being the acting, I feel as if, if the acting was more serious, the thrilling part of the movie would’ve hit the audience harder. Another thing is the sound, sometimes it is hard to hear what the actor saying. Something else is the camera quality of some clips, resulting in some blurry footage. For my movie to edit I used an app called CapCut, I made a script before filming, I used sound effects and some background music in my movie,  I used transitions, and different types of shooting techniques. After doing this project, I learned that editing is not as hard as I thought, and if I was editing something of choice I feel like I would enjoy it.

1.  A one or two-sentence description of the first two minutes.  What happens?
It first opens with "Summit productions," then it transitions to a black screen with credits, similar to a typewriting font with music. The credits and music continue, but now it shows someone's POV if they were sitting in the back of a truck, then fades to the main character in his room writing a letter.


2.  What is the genre and who is the target audience for this film? The genre is a hybrid of drama, romance, and a young adult novel. The film is targeted toward teenagers, mostly girls, struggling with mental health, depression, substance abuse, and eating disorders.


3.  Describe the opening credits and title sequences, including any company logos or idents.  When do they appear?  What color/font are they using? How does it "align" with the opening of the film?  Anything else you notice? It starts with the logo "SUMMIT entertainment", which then fades to a black card with white letters in a "typewriter" font with typing sounds, which says "summit entertainment presents." It then fades to a new black card that says, "a Mr. Mudd production," with the same font/sound effects as previously used. The font and color align with the opening of the film, along with the rest of the film since it is brought up that the main character, Charlie, likes to read and write and eventually wants to write a book, and eventually gets a typewriter as well.


3.  Describe it visually -- a shot-by-shot breakdown that includes the type of shot/movement, if any. Well, it starts with the logo and credits as previously stated above, but the next shot fades to a POV shot of if you were sitting in the bed of a truck while someone is driving through a tunnel, looking at the white tile walls and the bright yellow/orange colored lights. Then once out of the tunnel the camera tilts up and shows the bridge that's above.


4.  Describe the sound -- another "sound by sound" of the entire two minutes. Starts with the music for the logo, then the typewriting sounds, then a song called Could It Be Another Change by The Samples.


5. Describe how you felt at the end of the two minutes.  Did you want to know more?  What was left hanging, if anything?  What questions do you still have?  At the end of the two minutes, I felt intrigued since the main character only now began to talk, and I was curious about what he would say next. I feel like everything was left hanging since we did not get to absorb much in the first two minutes. I would ask what happens next and who the letter he is reading is for.


6.  How would you describe the editing style in this clip?  Any particular editing techniques you noticed, or the length of shots?  There was not much editing done in the first 2 minutes since most of the two minutes were just the driving through the tunnel it was a long shot/a medium long shot.


7.  How did these first two minutes adhere to conventions? I feel like the music, colors, lines, and shapes adhere to the conventions.


8.  How did these first two minutes break with conventions? I don't think the first two minutes broke the conventions since not much went on in the first two minutes.


9.  How did these first two minutes represent social groups or people or issues?  The song choice, the font of the words, and the colors, along with the beginning already kind of seeming a little gloomy matches the rest of the movie and what the movie addresses.

10. Why do you think this film was distributed on this particular site? I think this movie was distributed on many sites so it could be easily accessed so that the people who the movie is targeted have many ways to watch this movie. For example, you can find it on Amazon Prime, Youtube, Xfinity, etc. which is very accessible for teens.

If this film is created how the editor and I would like it to be, then we would like the film to look very realistic, show the audience what it is like for a teenage girl who is struggling mentally, and bring awareness that it is more common than you would think. We also intend on using the song "Space Song" by Beach House, since the song is more mellow and fits in with the common theme of the film. For inspiration, we used the movies "To The Bone," "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," "All The Bright Places," and "Girl Interrupted" to get more of an idea of the conventions needed for a drama-themed film with similar ideas and similar plots.
Setting-wise, we plan on filming inside the main character's kitchen, two of her classes, the courtyard, the girls' driveway, the school parking lot, and the hallways. There are no special costumes needed for this production, but there may be some makeup involved. For color, we plan on using more dim lighting, which is partially why we chose most of the film to be in the morning since it is not super bright out yet. We would like it to look that way since it fits in the conventions needed for a drama film. 
   Some shots we would like to include would be low-angle shots, tracking shots, over the shoulder shot, slanted angles, silhouetted lighting, long takes, and pan left/right. For editing, we intend to use match cuts, L cuts, direct cuts, fade in/out, overlapping sounds, and psychologically timed sounds. In our piece, we plan on representing social groups through the main character a young teenage girl, who is suffering quietly in high school, but it is quite obvious to the friends and family around her, but she is just overlooked. Our group will adhere to conventions by everything honestly, the lighting, the settings, the shots/angles, the transitions, the music, the character, the headphones, the plot, etc. Since we have not made the film yet I am not very sure how we will break the conventions, but after production, I am sure there will be at least two broken conventions since we are all pretty much beginners. For our actors we plan on using people who will relate to the roles, so the acting will be more natural for them, and we will tell them the plan and lay it out for them and just go from there! I have high hopes for this film!

If we were to distribute our movie to an independent studio, we would choose A24 studios. We would choose them because we feel our film would fit in very well with the other types of movies they distribute. A24 distributes and produces around 18 to 20 films a year, some of the biggest movies being Hereditary, Lady Bird, Moonlight, Everything Everywhere All, etc. They have successes spanning several genres, from award-winning drama pieces to daring and risky horror films. Since 2019 A24 has distributed 26 films in the genre Drama. Some films that A24 has released with similar target audiences and the same genres would be Lady Bird, Hot Summer Nights, Eighth Grade, and many more, leading me to believe that this studio would be perfect for our film which is also targeted at female teens and young adults, that is also a drama that depicts the “most precious stage of life”.
2. What is the title of your film? Do you think your title works?  Why or why not (short and sweet, pithy, reflective of genre, aimed at target audience, etc.)?  How could it be improved and why?  Do you have a new title now?
The title of my film is "The Inner Workings of The Teenage Mind", this title works for the film because it reflects the genre, and also the target audience. It shows it's targeted at females, and young adults, and it shows it will fall under the Drama genre. I feel like a way the title could be improved is by finding a way to shorten it, since it is kind of long. The title is still staying the same.
3.  Create a tag line for your poster.  Aim for familiar but fresh.  Remember your genre, and your target audience. "Is music enough to fill the void"
4.  Create a paragraph sketch of your target audience member.  Think about who would be interested in your film and why?
The target audience for drama films includes people who love to feel their emotions and appreciate a good, complex story. The gender and age of the target audience for this genre are females 16-30. Their income would be a little lower along with their education level since females normally 16-30 aren't too far along in their jobs, and are either still in school/ or freshly out of school. Some of their interests may be going to movies, shopping, going on walks, getting something to eat, getting their nails/hair done, etc. Some things they may dislike would be super busy places, sexism, being judged for their appearance, fishing, rough sports, etc. Things that may be important could be their friends, family, pets, music, makeup, clothing articles, etc. Some apps/platforms they may hang out on would be Tiktok, Instagram, Snapchat, youtube, etc. They may follow, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner, kylie Jenner, charlie Damelio, Jenna Ortega, and many more. I don't think girls at that age play many games but if they do I would say Sims or Fortnite. They would hang out at the beach, the mall, the park, the movies, their friend's houses, etc. They are reading "beautiful boy" "the perks of being a wallflower" and "Girl Interrupted." They are wearing brandy Melville, PacSun, forever21, and many more known places. They may be watching "All The Bright Places" "Outer Banks" "Riverdale" "And Stranger Things". They eat at Mcdonalds, Tropical Smoothie, Chipotle, and Chick Fil A.
5.  Using your notes from number four above, think about how your could reach that target audience if you were self distributing your film on Youtube or Vimeo or a similar platform.   How can you use that information to REACH them?  Where will you advertise?  INDICATE, FOR EACH GROUP, TEN PLACES WHERE YOU WOULD PLACE ADS TARGET ADS/TEASERS/TRAILERS (six virtual, four nonvirtual), and WHY, and mention that you would do this if you had to SELF DISTRIBUTE.
10 places I would distribute our film would be Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Youtube, Billboards, bus stops, train stations, schools, on trains, and in malls.
6.  How would you ENGAGE your target audience online?  How will you turn passive audience members into ACTIVE, ENGAGED audience members? This is in reference to pull marketing (or interactive marketing).  How will you get them to click on your ads?  What would you offer them in the form of promotions?  How would you incentivize them to repost/retweet/share/forward your ad?  Please INCLUDE SOME OUT OF THE BOX THINKING!  Audience engagement must be addressed in your critical reflections.
Find a way to turn something from our movie into a Tik Tok trend. I would turn passive audience members into actively engaged ones by getting famous well-known actors to post about it and get as many famous actors in our film as I could. I will get them to click on my ads by making them very intriguing. I would send them a box of hoodies, cups, t-shirts, etc without a movie and logo on them. 
7.  How would design your movie's poster?  How will you design it to be both familiar and fresh in regard to genre? What two or three main colors would you use? What is in the foreground and background? What iconography will be used? Type of fonts/typography?
If I were to design a movie poster I would have it be A shot of the main character walking in the hallway with her hood up and headphones in, while other peers are just walking all around her, and I'd put the name of the film at the top of the poster. To fit the drama genre in the background id put maybe a group of girls pointing at the main character. id also want lockers in the background and maybe a classroom door and other students. The main colors I would use would be blue and grey. Some iconography would be headphones, students, lockers, etc. The font on the poster that I would use would be yeseva one.

I learned you have to pay attention to every little thing so that the clips, audio, transitions, hair, makeup, weather, time of day, etc. match in different clips or else it won't match up. For example, in one clip our actor, Christine(Charlotte), had her hair up but in the next her hair was down. She also in one clip was wearing black pants, then in the next jeans. While moving through the editing process and watching as the editor edits the film, I realized a lot comes into the editing portion, you can't just slam the clips together because the audio might not match it, one clip may be quieter than the next, the lighting may not match up right, and more stuff like that. So for example in our film, we had one clip where we could hear the characters perfectly when Charlotte's "friends" were having a conversation, but then in the very last clip, we had to adjust the audio a ton because the wind made it hard to hear the "random boy" from the script. In another clip, we had to adjust the lighting to make the characters' emotions more visible.
