You are the manager of Hotel Sangaria. You have just got back from a business trip, and found out that two staff have had an argument. One staff, Omar came from Dubai, and another staff Kimura came from Japan. The cultural conflict started off when Omar, who had an emergency at home one morning had to come in slightly later for his shift (10.30 am) triggered Kimura’s anger who wanted to go back sharp at 10 am.

1. From the short case study, identify the two different ways of how they use time. Justify your answers with examples.

2. If you are involved in the conflict, what would you do to avoid the conflict?

3. As the manager, write in a memo to all staff about the issue. Highlight on the company’s vision of team’s collectivism, and educate everyone on how to become culturally literate.

Q1
In our opinion, we believe none are at faults as this situation is merely a misunderstanding. Omar should have informed that he has an emergency and that he would come in slightly later due to an emergency. On the other hand, Kimura should be more considerate since Omar had an emergency. Kimura is monochronic cultured where he believes time is money, that's why he was angry when Omar wasn't on time for his shift. Omar is polychronic cultured where he believes time is flexible and that time cannot be controlled.

In our point of view, to avoid conflict between two co-workers, like the incident happened to Omar and Kimura, Omar should explain the emergency he had in the morning to Kimura detailed so that Kimura could consider. Besides that, a worker should be ready 24/7 to work overtime because we work in a industry which we provide service to peoplepeople. Moreover, Kimura should not bring in culture or personal issues to the workplace in order to be a successful worker. For example, like Kimura who was angry because of her co-worker Omar came late for work. 🤪

Group Name ;- ( Hilton Cup 2018 )
1. Ryan Peter Marie
2. Cheh Hui Chin
3.Zarina Dzhuraeva
4. Yong Wei Hung

*Case Study on Kimura & Omar's Cultural Time Differences*

Mono-chronic ; These are the types of people who are more concerned about getting the job done and being on time, as of since for them time is money or time should not be wasted. Therefore Omar should try to understand Kimura's time perception and try to do his best to cope with Kimura's time and do a backup rescheduling.

Poly-chronic ; This way of using time is based more on multi-tasking rather than concerned on the hours of the clock, for them it is mostly regarding on the tasks that have to be completed and when it is done then forward to the next task. In this case Kimura should be more understanding towards Omar's perception and try to be more flexible with the working hours as long as the task is done.

Conclusion ;

In conclusion , both parties need to communicate and learn the difference in their cultures hence from preventing further conflicts from happening. Learning from both Kimura & Omar, they're grown up from different cultures with different backgrounds but in the end both of them still gets the job done.

question3
Recently there was argument between staff and it is not good for teamwork spirit and working environment. The staff should have inform others pre-hand of possibility being late. Meanwhile, the other staff should have tolerate and consider on this matter because it is a emergency. The staff should have not quick judge and think of a rational reason of the staff being late. The staff only late by 30 minutes hence it is not a big deal and should be settle in a good way. As a team, everyone should have tolerate with each other and think of others to improve team spirit and efficiency of working environment. Respect everyone equally despite their differences in skin colour, religion, language and culture

To become cultural literate, you can do more cultural activities such as........ Other than that, each and everyone should be more observant around us, and also get into conversation with cultural literate and well-rounded people. Ask them about stuff that they are passionate about.
