Address erosion of manners before it becomes a crisis

RESPECT, humility and civility, values which once defined our society, seem to be steadily diminishing in both everyday interactions and online platforms nowadays. The rise in use of harsh language, open defiance of parents and teachers, and casual acceptance of insults on social media reflect a troubling shift that is too often excused as honesty or humour.

Several factors contribute to this decline, including the uncontrolled influence of technology, an education system focused on academic results rather than character development, the busy schedules of families that limit transmission of values, and popular culture that tends to glorify arrogance instead of modesty.

The consequences are weakened bonds between generations, erosion of cultural identity and growth of hostile behaviour, especially online.

Addressing this issue before it becomes a crisis of manners requires joint effort by parents who must provide strong examples at home; schools, which should integrate moral education with intellectual growth; social media influencers who should promote respectful conduct; and individuals themselves who must practise empathy, patience and kindness.

Manners are not decorative qualities but the foundation of dignity and unity in society. Without them, material progress and technological advancements are just empty achievements.
