Alexander G. Bell was curious about plants and animals. He also loved the wonderful sound of music. Alexander went to school for only 5 years, but never stopped learning. However, he didn't do well in school. He also didn't get his middle name until he was 11 years old.  He only got a middle name because he asked his father for one!  As a child he tried to build a robot with his brother. His father worked in a huge mill and when Alexander G Bell was 12 years old he made a machine to get husks off the wheat grain faster. Bell was one of the paramount inventors in the world?! This creative man invented the phone. Without him we wouldn't be able to communicate using the phone. He also created the wireless phone! He made the first voice recording on a wax disc in 1885 of his own voice. He developed the metal detector to try to save the life of one of our presidents. In 1881, James Garfield  had been shot and was in critical condition. Doctors searched for the bullet but had no luck. Bell's new invention, the metal detector, was used on the president to locate the bullet buried deep in his body.  This cool innovator also made hydrofoils. A hydrofoil is a watercraft that races across the top of the water.  The fourth hydrofoil he designed went about 70 miles per hour. That was a new world record. This was the first ever transcontinental phone call. By 1917 almost all of the United States had phone service.
*Bell also opened a school for teachers of the deaf in Boston and became a teacher at Boston University.
