The Men

Petruchio, Patrick, and David

Similarities- All the men in the versions are similar in their manners and their goals. Each one wants the same thing, the affection of their desired significant other. In this they all show evidence of perseverance and will power by persisting on. Despite their outer motives, they all did what they did for their own reasons as well. They all felt they could accomplish what they wanted and changed their strategies to accommodate.

Differences- The men have many differences as well. This is due to the differing versions and their interpretations. In The Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio believed that he deserved all the respect regardless of how he treated Katherine barbecue he was the head of the household. This is not the case with 10 Thing I Hate About You and Moonlighting where they thought that the man and the women should have equal authority in the relationship. There is a time difference between the versions which also alters the way the versions go about interpreting the story.

The Women

Katherine, Kat, and Maddie

Similarities- The women of the versions many similarities. They all believe in doing things for themselves and not for anyone else. Each one is considered "crazy" or "wild" because of their nature and outward personality. They all advocate for them self and believe that they should not have to submit to a man or anyone else. Each woman has their own goals and aspirations but have a very similar way about going about reaching them.

Differences- They also have many differences. In The Taming of the Shrew, Katherine does eventually compromise with Petruchio and agree to change her ways and "submit" because they do find love in each other. In Moonlighting and 10 Things I Hate About You, a different but similar way takes place. Both the man and the woman take on an equally powerful role. They compromise in a different way. Another difference is that in The Taming of the Shrew and 10 Thing I Hate About You, there is no initial attraction from the women, but in Moonlighting that isn't the case with Maddie. She seems fairly open even though at first she seems very against it.

The Scene- Wooing Scene

Taming of the Shrew, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Moonlighting

Similarities- All of the wooing scenes share similar traits. They all have an element of "the chase" in which the potential husband tries to control or win the affection of the potential wife. In each version the scene is gone about by showing of interest and power. For example in 10 Things I Hate About You, Patrick sings on the bleachers to her to show that he's not giving up.

Differences- Due to the different interpretations, each version has its differences as well. The Taming of the Shrew takes on an interpretation that shows that the husband should have the dominance while other two versions show that both parties have equal power and respect. In the play version and in Moonlighting there is some initial attraction that is evident which is not in 10 Thing I Hate About You.

Theme

All three interpretations have a unique theme but all relate to the same story line.

In The Taming of the Shrew, the theme shows that sometimes you can change for love. Katherine changes her ways, and Petruchio changes his, in order to make the relationship work.

In 10 Things I Hate About You, the theme can easily be seen as you should not judge others based on appearance. Everyone judged Kat but did not really know her, even Patrick. After he got to know her, found he really did love her.

In Moonlighting, the theme is presented through Maddie and David. The theme correlates as following society is not always the best way to go. David and Maddie had struggles with the way society thought the role of men and women should be in a relationship and in marriage.

Shakespeare wrote his play, i think to be more of a comedy. He wrote it please the people by representing that day and age's societal norms.

The other two versions were more modern which were shown to appease today's norms. Also to try and share the story with younger audiences who may not totally enjoy reading or watching Shakespeare. People love a good Rom-Com.
