Compassion, Trust, and Respect

As a nurse, I can integrate trauma-informed care by treating every patient with kindness, patience, and respect. I never know what experiences a person may be carrying, so I want to ensure they feel safe and comfortable in my care. I can do this by listening without judgment, explaining procedures before I perform them, and allowing patients to ask questions and be involved in decisions about their care. Even small actions, such as taking the time to listen or offering reassurance, can help build trust and make a patient feel supported during a difficult time. Trauma-informed care promotes patient safety, improves communication, and helps patients feel respected and empowered throughout their healthcare experience.

Susan K

I can integrate trauma informed care in my nursing practice by taking a more collaborative approach to my nursing practice. I want my patients to feel like they are actively involved in their care and that they still have all of their autonomy and choices. I am just a person and nurse who cares about them and am here as a resource and support during their care. This ties into my use of the word collaboration, we are working together to be a team during their care, I do not hold power over them or try and tell them what to do. Compassion because these patients no matter what they are experiencing are experiencing some kind of stress and I want to understand where their stress comes from and help negate that as much as possible in a way that will be most beneficial to them. Empowerment because I want to build my patients up and let them know what options they have and how important they are and that their choices do matter. Stephen Q

One of the biggest lessons I learned in this course is that caring for victims goes far beyond addressing physical injuries. Many individuals carry experiences that can affect how they respond to healthcare providers, examinations, questions, and even routine procedures. Before this course, I think I focused more on the medical aspects of patient care. Now, I better understand the importance of considering how a person's experiences may influence their feelings of safety, trust, and willingness to seek help. Something that stood out to me is that a patient’s reaction may not always be related to the current situation, but instead to something they have experienced in the past.

As a nurse, I can apply this understanding by creating an environment where patients feel respected and supported. This includes introducing myself, explaining procedures before performing them, asking permission when appropriate, and giving patients choices whenever possible. I also think it is important to pay attention to nonverbal cues and recognize when a patient may be uncomfortable, fearful, or overwhelmed. Small actions such as listening without judgment, maintaining privacy, and allowing patients to share information at their own pace can make a significant difference. Moving forward, I want to be the type of nurse who helps patients feel heard, valued, and involved in their care, especially during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Olivia S.

Compassion • Listening • Safety

These three words describe what trauma-informed care means to me. Compassion reminds me to treat every patient with kindness, even when I don't know what they have experienced. Listening means taking the time to hear a patient's concerns without judgment and allowing them to share their story at their own pace. Safety is creating an environment where patients feel both physically and emotionally secure. Trauma-informed care recognizes that past experiences can influence how a person responds to healthcare, so creating an atmosphere built on trust, respect, and empowerment is essential (Wilson et al., 2013).

As a nurse, I want every patient to feel like they are more than just a diagnosis or room number. Sometimes the smallest actions—introducing myself, explaining what I'm about to do, asking for permission before touching a patient, or sitting down to listen for a few extra minutes—can make a meaningful difference. I may never know what experiences someone has been through, and honestly, I don't always need to. What matters is providing care that is respectful, patient-centered, and free of judgment. I also want to remember that behaviors that may seem difficult or uncooperative could actually be rooted in fear or previous trauma rather than a lack of willingness to participate in care.

I believe trauma-informed care is something that should be part of every patient interaction, not just when abuse or violence is suspected. The items listed above are simple things, but they can have a lasting impact on a patient's experience and recovery (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2014).

– Marcus P.

References

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
