1941 - U.S. enters World War II

World War II was a major even in the history of the U.S. and, in all actuality, helped the U.S. in many ways. Before WWI the U.S. was in a depression. A Great Depression. Unemployment rates were through the roof and the economy was in complete disarray. One contributor to this depression is the elections of Herbert Hoover. He and his administration were very laissez faire, so when the Great Depression was in full swing, they did little to fix it. The U.S.'s entrance to WWII pulled the country out of the depression. Since many men were drafted and went to the military, women were able to take the jobs (much like WWI), dropping the unemployment rate to an all time low. With the war came a high demand for consumer goods and a need for production of military equipment. This helped pulled many countries out of the hole and put them back on the market. During WWII, the U.S. is unified under the thought of defeating communism. Also, the atom bomb is created in 1945, sending the U.S. to the top of the food-chain in the world. WWII comes to an end, leading to a second Red Scare and McCarthyism, in 1950, accusing hundreds of people (again) of communist relations and ideas. The second Red Scare is one direct cause of the beginning of the Cold War, after relations with Russia worsen with disputes over land and government styles getting increasingly hostile. WWII was a great technological, and economical advance in the history of the U.S. leading us directly into the Space Race and other great accomplishments in the 20th century.

1917 - U.S. enters World War I

The effects of World War I on America were broad, covering the political, economic and social aspects of the U.S. Unlike the European countries, factories and cities in the U.S. had not been destroyed. Manufacturing, production and efficiency increased tremendously because of the necessity of goods and military supplies during the Great War. During WWI, the United States emerged as an industrial world leader. With the economy booming, profits were increasing which led to the period called the Roaring Twenties conveying a massive rise in consumerism for the upper class. A major event that occurred in the years before America enters WWI is Prohibition, which banned any form of alcohol in the United States. This caused a major uproar in the crime industry with gangs and mobs forming to sell alcohol illegally. The Zimmerman Telegram was another event leading up the the first World War. It was released to the public in March of 1917 and this, along with Germany's unrestricted warfare, and the Bolshevik Revolution led the U.S. to declare war on Germany. During the war, women were given the responsibility to take the place of men in the workplace who were drafted in the military. Throughout the war, inflation began to rise and companies began to lay off workers to keep down operating costs. The power of Work Labor Unions had grown during the war, leading to workers protesting and in 1919, the U.S. saw a massive wave of strikes. Competition for employment led to racial tensions and race riots brewing hatred and suspicion. This led to the first Red Scare and the fear of communism. After WWI, women had proven themselves to America, gaining the right to vote with the ratification of the 19th Amendment. With the end of WWI, in 1919, came the election of President Warren G. Harding in 1921. World War I proved to the rest of the world how mighty the U.S. military really is and the good intent from Americans to the rest of the world. It also set the precedent for a rivalry with Germany.

1898 - Spanish American War

In the course of the Spanish-American War, the United States seized the island of Puerto Rico from Spain. Tensions began to rise on May 12 when a blockade of the city of San Juan was ordered and executed by the U.S. Navy, followed with the landing of 1,300 U.S. soldiers off the coast of Guánica on July 12. The peace treaty was signed in Paris on December 10, 1898. The US gained the islands of Puerto Rico Guam and the Philippines from Spain. One major event before the Spanish-American War was the Worlds Columbian Exposition in Chicago, which marked the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival to America. An even that eventually lead to the War is the sinking of the USS Maine, USS Maine in Havana harbor, Cuba killing nearly three quarters of the crew. No cause has ever been found but theories range from Spanish Espionage to an undetected fire in a coal bunker. After the Spanish American War, The Philippines started a war for independence against the United States, which was eventually diminished with the U.S. promising eventual self government. Also, following the War, the Great Blizzard came in play with the United States (especially the South) reaching record lows in temperature. This War gave the U.S. much more land mass which can be used for strategical military advantages in future wars.

The Korean War was a three year conflict, started when troops of North Korea, backed by the Soviets, invade South Korea. This leads to U.S. involvement when two days later, with the U.S. Air Force and Navy being ordered to the peninsula by President Truman. On June 30, ground forces and air strikes were approved against North Korea. During the war, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were found guilty of wartime espionage and were executed on June 19, 1953. Also, the description of a double helix DNA molecule was published by Francis Crick and James D. Watson. Before the Korean War, the Brinks robbery in Boston went into play; eleven masked bandits stole $2.8 million in an armored car outside the express office, and for the first time, the census of 1950 counted the population of the United States over 150 million people, which was a 14% increase since the last census and now showed a count of 150,697,361. After the War, on August 19, 1953 the CIA assisted the overthrow of the Iran government, and retained the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to the throne. Also, the first color televisions were put on sale in December of 1953.

The Civil Rights Movement was a movement that stretched decades, with the goal of achieving legal rights for African Americans that other Americans possessed. This resulted in the largest legislative impacts which were directly impacted by protests organized from the mid-1950s until 1968. The Civil Rights Movement included strategies, various groups, and organized social movements to end legalized racial segregation and discrimination in the United States,. Activists used nonviolent campaigns and protests, eventually securing recognition in federal law and protection of Americans. Before the Civil Rights Movements, the Twenty-Second Amendment was ratified in 1951, and Eisenhower was elected as the 34th President of the U.S, in 1953. During the movement, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 on July 2, which bans discrimination in public places and in employment, and Martin Luther King Jr. lead the March on Washington in 1963. After the Movement, Dr. King was assassinated in '68 and the shootings at Kent State broke out in 1970.

In the heat of the Space Race, the U.S. puts the first man on the moon, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. This was a major event in not only the U.S., but in the world, as Neil Armstrong's famous words describe, " That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." This event set the precedent for many more space missions, even ones that have not even happened yet. Two events before this were President Kennedy's assassination in 1963 and the failed invasion of Cuba, The Bay of Pigs.
