The city of Berlin (located deep inside the Russian occupation zone) was also divided between Russian controlled East Berlin, and American, British, and French controlled West Berlin. At first people could travel between East and West Berlin. But then, during the early years of the Cold War, thousands of East Germans fled to the Democratic  West. In response, the Communist East German authorities built a wall that completely encircled West Berlin. It was built overnight. The Berlin Wall was put up on August 13, 1961. The Berlin Wall was standing for 28 years. Hungary dismantled its borders with Austria, offering East Germans another escape route to the West. Then in June 1989, the Polish head of state,  General Wojciech Jaruzelski was forced to lift the ban on Solidarity, The Workers Union. In Poland's first election in 30 years, Solidarity stormed into victory. Tadeusz Mazowiecki was elected head of Eastern Europe's first non-communist government. East Germans started to flood into Poland through foreign embassies, pressuring East German authorities  to make changes. The wall seemed less frightening then before.
